New Delhi, Mar 12: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday agreed before the Supreme Court to
set up a State Minority Commission by identifying the minorities in the state.
The apex court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed
by lawyer, Ankur Sharma, related to the Minority Rights of non-Muslims in the
state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Petitioner-cum-lawyer, Sharma, in his plea, demanded that there should be an identification of religious groups who are in minority in Jammu and Kashmir, and also sought a formation of Minority Commission in the state.
The plea asserted that in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Muslims are a majority community and at the same time, they also used to receive and get all kinds of packages and assistance from the Centre related to the minority community.
He sought a direction from the apex court to identify those who are getting these facilities and also pleaded that these packages should not be provided to them.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, asked the J&K state government to do so on the basis of the report produced by them before the court. UNI
