NEW DELHI, Apr. 5: Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli begins his three-day visit to India on
Friday amid hopes on both the sides of bridging their recent differences and
resetting their ties once again to restore full measure of mutual trust and
confidence.
While announcing Mr. Oli’s visit to India, his first after
getting re-elected as the Prime Minister of the Himalayan nation, External
Affairs Ministry had stated that both India and Nepal enjoy age-old, special
ties of friendship and cooperation. ``The upcoming visit will provide and
opportunity to the two sides to review wide-ranging cooperative partnership and
to progress it further for the benefit of the two peoples,’’ the MEA statement
had noted.
Besides his official engagements with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Nepalese premier will also call on the President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu. Several Union Ministers are also scheduled to call on him. Mr. Oli will also visit G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. He will also engage with the business community as well as Nepalese diaspora in India.
In an article on Indo-Nepal ties, S D Muni, Professor Emeritus, JNU said that Mr. Oli’s visit comes at a time when the relations have been damaged seriously over the past two years. ``For India, the reset of relations with Nepal is a part of the broader reset in the regional context where India is feeling the pinch of alienated neighbours emboldened by an assertive and affluent China, strategically propelled to expand and deepen its presence in India's neighbourhood, including the Indian Ocean, under the cover of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI),’’ Prof. Muni observed.
The economic blockade amid Madhesi agitation had harmed India’s relations with Nepal which was being seen as tilting heavily towards China. Infrastructure, connectivity and trade are some of the key areas where India can actively assist Nepal which can offer assurance on tackling terrorism and human trafficking, sources said.
Mr. Oli, in his Parliament speech, had said that he wanted ``a harmonious relationship with neighbours based on ‘mutual respect, equality, non-interference’’. UNI
