Bengaluru, May 5 :  The May 12 election to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly was a crucial election that had the potential to start the end of onslaught on the freedom of the people by Hindutva forces like the BJP which had deeply curtailed the freedoms of the people, Shashi Tharoor MP and Chairman of All India Professionals’ Congress said here.
Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, he urged the voters of Karnataka to end a ‘dramatic message’ to the BJP and defeat it as this election was not only about politics of development, but also about protecting peoples’ freedoms. The people should stand firm against forces that want to restrict what people wear, eat and who they have to love and what language they speak or which gods they pray to.
He said for the first time in decades, a State government had completed its full term of five years in Karnataka, with an outstanding record of accomplishments by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. Ninty-five per cent of the promises made during the 2013 polls have been fulfilled. ‘’The people of Karnataka have an opportunity to reward the politics of development by re-electing the Congress party and rejecting the politics of division that BJP stands for,’’ he said.
Dr Tharoor quoting AICC President's mention that the BJP candidates list looked like ‘most wanted’ list, he said it depicted elements of cronyism and communalism. Previous BJP government in the State saw three Chief Ministers and the first Chief Minister resigned due to significant corruption charges. Hence the voters should reject such a party.
He slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for lowering the reputation of Bengaluru city which was among most glorious cities in the world and gets highest investment compared to any city in India and provides millions of quality jobs. ‘’I agree that urbanization is a great change. The Prime Minister, instead of his wrong propaganda, should not belittle the reputation of such a great city but help it reach better heights,’’ he added.
He said BJP’s politics of hatred will end after the 2019 general elections as it had ‘wounded’ India. The menace of ‘gou rakshaks’ and promotion of intolerance had frustrated the people and they will vote out BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections, he added.UNI
