New Delhi, May 5 : In an effort to reassert New Delhi’s influence in South American nations, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday left on his maiden foreign tour to Guatemala, Panama and Peru.
during the visit, his first after assuming office nine months back, the Vice President will visit Guatemala, Panama and Peru in Latin America from May 6-11, 2018, accompanied by a high-level delegation to include Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Jasvantsinh Sumanbahi Bhabhor, four Members of Parliament and senior officers of the Government.
“Historic political and cultural ties with our friends in Central and South America! On his first overseas visit, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu travels to Guatemala, Panama and Peru,” said Raveesh Kumar, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson in a tweet.

Over the last few years, India’s relations with the region, both in terms of political engagement, as well as trade and commercial engagement, has intensified significantly, beginning with the landmark visit of Prime Minister of India to Brazil in July 2014, his meetings with South American leaders there, followed by his visit to Mexico in 2016. These meetings at the highest level have been sustained through frequent interactions/'.
Guatemala has supported India’s permanent membership in the United Nation’s Security Council. It also has strained relations with both China and Pakistan.
The tour to Panama is significant because of growing engagement between China and Panama. The country also has the highest presence of Indian diaspora of 15,000.
In Peru, the Vice President will participate in the celebration of 55 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries. UNI
