Mumbai, Oct 15 (PTI) A 53-year-old air hostess suffered "serious injuries" Monday after falling off an Air India aircraft which was getting ready for departure at the airport here, airline and hospital authorities said.

The woman suffered multiple fractures in the incident and is under observation at the city-based Nanavati Hospital.

The airline said the incident took place in the morning on the Air India's New Delhi-bound flight AI 864 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here.

It termed the incident as "unfortunate" and said it was investigating it.

"In an unfortunate incident, one of our cabin crew (members), Harsha Lobo, fell down on the tarmac from the Boeing-777 aircraft door while closing it," the airline said in a statement.

"She sustained injuries to her legs and has been taken to the Nanavati Hospital for further treatment," it added.

The Nanavati Hospital said a cabin crew member of the Air India flight was brought to the hospital at 7 am after she suffered "serious injuries".

"The patient is suffering from right leg compound fracture, fracture in both heels and soft tissue injury in chest, abdomen and lower spine. She also suffered a sprain in the neck (cervical spine)," it said in a statement.

The woman is under observation and is being treated by Dr Prakash M Doshi, director of orthopaedics and traumatology, Nanavati Hospital's Chief Operating Officer Dr Rajendra Patankar said.

About three years ago, an Air India engineer had got sucked into the aircraft's engine at the airport here when the pilots started the engines prematurely after mistaking a signal.

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 20: Commercial flight operations from the Naval airport at Kochi commenced today with the first Air India flight from Bengaluru arriving this morning.

Small aircraft are being operated from the naval airport as the Kochi International Airport has shut operations till August 26 following flooding in the heavy rains.

The first AI flight from Bengaluru arrived this morning and returned by 0830 hrs.

Train services between state capital and Ernakulam are also slowly becoming normalised.

Skeletal services were run between Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha-Kottayam routes saw trains packed with flood affected people moving to the houses of their friends and relatives.

The deadly monsoon rains have claimed 210 lives since August 8 and has displaced over 7.14 lakh people from their homes.

In the worst affected Chengannur in Alappuzha district, efforts are on to rescue some of those stranded in certain pockets, including Pandanad.

According to India Met Department, a fresh low pressure area has formed over North West Bay of Bengal yesterday.

However, it will not have any significant impact over Kerala, where rainfall is likely to decrease further gradually during the next five days.

Rehabilitation will be the next big focus of the state government with most of the marooned having been rescued, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Rainfall over Kerala during the South West Monsoon (June 1 to Aug 19) has been exceptionally high.

Kerala has so far received 2346.6 mm rains against the normal of 1649.5 mm, according to IMD.

High-range Idukki recorded the highest excess rainfall (92 per cent above normal) followed by Palakkad (72 per cent above normal).

These two districts had reported several deaths and massive destructions due to flooding and landslides.

Thirteen people lost their lives yesterday while 7,24,649 lakh people were housed in 5,645 relief camps across the state.

Rescue operations are in final stages.

Around 22,000 people were rescued yesterday alone in the operations launched by the defence personnel, national and state disaster response forces, fishermen and local people.The next big challenge for the government is the epidemic.

The chief minister said in each panchayat six health officers would be deployed to ensure there was no outbreak of any communicable diseases as the flood water recedes.

People have started returning home from relief centres with flood waters receding.Many were shocked to see the state of their homes covered with mud and slush as the water receded. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 18: Air India has initiated a probe into the cause delay of a Kolkata-bound flight from Dhaka on August 8 amid a report claiming that a pilot was attempting to sneak in hilsa fish.

Flight AI229 from Dhaka to Kolkata was delayed by one hour. The flight, scheduled to depart at 9.25 pm, finally took off at about 10.30 pm.

While a report claimed that a pilot had a fracas with the security over carrying the hisla, sources said that an engineering snag was mentioned in the log book.

When contacted, an airline spokesperson said they were investigating the cause of the delay as there can be several reasons arising from engineering issues to operations and ATC clearance.

"We are investigating the reason for the delay of the flight from Dhaka to Kolkata that day. In fact, Air India probes into the cause for delay of any flight which does not depart on time. There can be so many reasons for a delay from engineering to operations to even ATC clearance.

"It will not be fair to make any unsubstantiated conjuncture on the cause of the delay," the spokesperson said. (PTI)

Chennai, Jul 21: A Chennai-bound Air India flight from Mumbai carrying 111 passengers besides crew made a priority landing at the international airport here today following some technical problem, an airport official said.

The official said an alert was sounded before the aircraft landed under 'local standby' protocol.

The term local standby refers to sounding an alert to fire and rescue services to tackle any untoward incidents upon the arrival of an aircraft which is landing in emergency conditions.

"We got a request from the pilot asking us to be on local standby as the flight was approaching the airport. We alerted the (fire and rescue) services to be ready. Soon after it landed, the passengers alighted and the plane was towed away to a bay," he said.

Later, the snag was rectified and the plane resumed its journey to Delhi, he said.

However, the Air India officials were not available for a comment. (PTI)

New Delhi, June 30: About 170 passengers of Air India's Delhi-Kochi-Dubai flight, scheduled to depart at 5.10 am, were held up at the IGI airport here for almost six hours, with the airline saying that it was due to technical reasons.

However, the airline sources claimed that the delay was because of non-availability of crew.

"AI 933 Delhi-Kochi-Dubai is held up at Delhi due to technical reasons. Revised ETD is 1100 hrs. We sincerely apologise for the delay and inconvenience caused to our esteemed passengers," Air India said in a tweet.

Sources said the crew issue was resolved and the flight took off at 11 am.

Passengers of Air India's Delhi-Tokyo flight, scheduled to leave last night, were also remained stranded for almost seven hours due to a problem with the air conditioning system, sources said.

The Flight AI 306 with 171 passengers on board was supposed to depart from the Indira Gandhi International Airport at 9.15 pm yesterday, but it took off at 4 am after the problem was fixed, they said.

Passengers of both the flight took to Twitter to vent their anger. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jun 23 : Scores of Air India passengers were stranded at several airports across the country as a technical glitch in the airline's check-in software delayed 25 flights today, officials said.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha tendered apologies for the inconvenience caused to the passengers.

Services remained affected for three hours from 12.10 PM to 3.10 PM, the airline said.

While an Air India spokesperson told PTI that the departures of 23 flights were delayed by 15-30 minutes, the airline later tweeted putting the figure at 25 as passenger queues kept swelling at check-in counters.

Some unconfirmed report suggested that some international services were also affected at the IGI Airport here.

Air India's software solution is managed by SITA, a global airlines IT services solution major, which provides its check-in, boarding and baggage tracking technology.

The airline blamed glitch in SITA's central server in Atlanta for the system failure with worldwide impact.

A SITA spokesperson said that they were conducting an investigation to find out the root cause of the network connectivity issue and prevent a recurrence.

"We have been following up on this matter and the systems have now been restored. Apologies for the inconvenience suffered. @airindiain has been asked to ensure that our valued passengers are kept fully informed at all times," Sinha tweeted in reply to a passenger who vent his ire against the airline for failing to provide information about the delays.

"Due to unexpexted network connectivity issues at SITA #Atlanta #Datacenter , which had a #worldwide impact, 25 flights were delayed from 1210 hrs to 1510 hrs on #Airindia network. Operations are normal now (sic)," the airline tweeted soon after.

Just reached Delhi Airport and found out that Air India servers are down for the last two hours. All domestic and international flights are grounded. The airport looks like a mela of stranded passengers with hardly any space to even walk, BlueKraft Digital Foundation CEO Akhilesh Mishra wrote on Twitter.

Another passenger, stranded at the IGI Airport here, tweeted to Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to draw his attention to the passengers ordeals. "Sir please enquire about the situation of Air India flights at Delhi Airport urgently. It's a complete chaos since last 4 hours. No flight has taken off and all passengers are extremely disturbed. The ground staff is totally ineffective in answering any query."

Reacting to the incident, a spokesperson of SITA said, We experienced a complex network connectivity issue at one of our data centers today, impacting primary and secondary routes, which resulted in some services to our customers being disrupted. The connection has now been restored by our network provider and services are returning to normal operations."

"We regret any impact this incident has had on our customers and their passengers. Our priority remains, as always, to ensure a stable system so that our customers can conduct their business efficiently and effectively. We are currently conducting a full investigation to discover the root cause to establish the cause and to prevent a recurrence, he added. PTI

Chennai, Jun 20: A Delhi-bound Air India flight carrying 131 passengers was forced to return to the city airport today after suffering a bird-hit 20 minutes into its journey, the national carrier said today.
All passengers are safe.
The flight AI 440 was airborne for nearly 20 minutes before it suffered the bird-hit, "forcing" it to return to the city airport, an Air India spokesperson said.
"All passengers are safe and the aircraft is being inspected by Air India engineers to assess the damage caused due to the bird strike," he said.
The stranded passengers were later accommodated in the airline's subsequent flights as well as in those operated by private carriers, he added. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jun 19 :  The government has decided not to go ahead with Air India stake sale in an election year and will provide required funds for its operations, a senior official said today.


The decision comes less than 3 weeks after the proposed 76 per cent strategic stake sale in debt laden national carrier failed to attract any bidder.

Air India will very soon get funds from the government for its day to day operations and will even place orders for a couple of aircraft, the government official said.

The decision was taken at the high level meeting convened by Union Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday. The meeting was attended by Piyush Goyal, who has been temporarily given the charge of finance ministry, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and other senior officials of finance and civil aviation ministries.

"The airline is posting operational profits. None of the flights go empty. With all the cost efficient mechanism in place, we will continue improving its operational efficiency. There is no need to rush in for disinvestment as of now," the official told PTI.

The government is looking at turning around the company to ensure that it makes profits on overall basis before going in for listing.

"Certain conditions have to be met before listing a company. Once Air India fulfils those, we will go in for an initial public offering and subsequent listing," the source said.

As per Sebi norms, a company has to post profit in previous three financial years before it can list itself in the stock exchanges.

"The focus is on improving operational efficiency. We will continue to boost employee morale, starting from the top level, to better the functioning of the airline. Funds would be provided as and when required," the source added.

The government had originally proposed to offload 76 per cent equity share capital of the national carrier as well as transfer the management control to private players. The buyer would have had to take over Rs 24,000 crore debt or the carrier along with over Rs 8,000 crore of liabilities.

However, the stake sale failed to attract any bidders when the bidding process got completed on May 31.PTI

New Delhi, May 29 :  An air hostess of Air India has accused a senior executive of sexual harassment, prompting Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to ask the national carrier to take immediate steps to address the issue. 

In a letter addressed to Prabhu and also marked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the air hostess has asked the government to appoint a 'neutral' investigation committee to look into the incident. 

Responding to the letter, the aviation minister tweeted, "Asked Air India CMD to immediately address the issue. If necessary, will appoint another committee". 

The air hostess alleged that she had been harassed for the last six years by the senior executive, describing him as a "predator" and equal, if not worse, than Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood film maker charged with sexual misconduct by leading actresses.

"This senior executive is a predator and has sexually propositioned me, abused me, used abusive languages on other women in my presence, spoken of sexual acts with me and other women in my presence in office premises...

"He has insulted me and denied me positions and privileges after I rejected his advances and he had made my life a misery at work and continues to do so," she said in her letter dated May 25.

The woman said that she would reveal the name of the executive if she gets an audience with the aviation minister. 

The air hostess maintained that she had lodged a complaint with Air India last September and written to then CMD of the airline, but "none was forthcoming".

She also accused the airline's women cell of dragging its feet on the issue. 

"The complaints committee took over three months to summon the senior executive and never gave us a chance to cross-examine him. Even though we volunteered to cross-examine him, the committee felt no need to call us," the air hostess alleged in the letter. PTI

New Delhi, Mar 19: The national air carrier Air India will launch its direct flight between New Delhi and Tel Aviv in Israel from March 22.
In a statement issued on Monday Air India said that starting Thursday, the 256-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner will operate thrice a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, and is expected to cover the distance in seven hours.
The statement said that on March 22, the inaugural flight AI139 will take off from Delhi at 6 pm and arrive at Tel Aviv at 9:45 pm. The return flight will depart from Tel Aviv at 11:15 pm and reach the national capital at 10:00 am the next day. However, from April 1, AI139 will depart from Delhi at 4:50 pm and reach Tel Aviv at 9:45 pm, while the return flight will leave Tel Aviv at 11:15 pm to reach Delhi at 9:00 am the next day. 
The direct flight, apart from boosting tourism prospects in India and Israel, the launch of this flight is targeted at travelers from countries in Southeast Asia and Australia.
Air India stated that the duration of the New Delhi-Tel Aviv flight would be nearly two hours shorter than that of Israel's national carrier, El Al, which operates direct flights between Tel Aviv and Mumbai. UNI

Ms Swati, who prefers not to use family surname, said her father has reached this height today on the basis of his hard work and she is proud of her father.
