Aligarh (UP), Feb 22 :  The police have dropped sedition charges slapped against 14 Aligarh Muslim University after the recent protests on the campus, citing lack of evidence .

The students were booked for sedition after Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) district president Mukesh Lodhi alleged he was assaulted by some students who chanted pro-Pakistan slogans, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhari said Friday the charges were dropped three days back as there is no evidence to support them.

He said there is no videographic proof or any other evidence to support the claim that anti-India or pro-Pakistan slogans were raised by these boys during the clash between two student groups at University Circle on February 12".

The clashes appeared to have been triggered by reports that AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi was visiting the campus.

Bharatiya Janata Party youth wing BJYM had demanded that the reported visit should be banned.

There was also an altercation between some AMU students and a television news crew that had come to cover the anticipated visit, which never took place.

Meanwhile, the police raided a house in Noida Friday, looking for Kashmiri student Basin Hilal over a tweet mocking the security forces after the Pulwama terror attack.

They failed to find the student who has already been suspended by the AMU authorities.

A case under section IPC 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) had been registered against him.                [Agencies]

Jammu, Oct 15 (PTI) Senior CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami Monday alleged that a hate campaign has been unleashed against Kashmiri students in the country and asked the Centre to take steps to ensure their safety outside the state.

He urged the Centre to initiate criminal proceedings against people found guilty of harassing Kashmiri students in different parts of the country and also sought intervention of the state governor Satya Pal Malik to ensure safe and secure environment to Kashmiris outside the state. 

"The harassment of Kashmiri students at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and in different colleges and educational institutions in Punjab at the behest of communal forces is unacceptable and must be condemned in strongest words as such incidents have serious implications, the CPI(M) leader said in a statement here.

Three Kashmiri students of AMU were booked on sedition charges for allegedly raising "anti-India" slogans and trying to hold a prayer meeting for Hizbul Mujahideen commander Manan Bashir Wani on October 12 (Friday).

Twenty seven-year-old Wani, pursing a PhD course in Allied Geology at the AMU, had quit the university and joined militant ranks in January this year. He was killed in an encounter at Shatgund village in Handwara area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Thursday.

"The already prevailing uncertain situation in Kashmir gets compounded by such incidents. AMU incident is not an isolated one against Kashmiris as in the past, similar incidents have happened in various state of the country. 

"It is actually a hate campaign which has been unleashed on Kashmiris outside the state and it has patronage of ruling party in the country, Tarigami alleged.

The Kulgam MLA said thousands of Kashmiri students are studying outside the state and the "atmosphere of hatred against them" has the potential to ruin their career. 

"Students need to be provided with peaceful and secure atmosphere both in and outside educational institutions, he said, adding the state governor must take up the issue of harassment of Kashmiri students with the concerned state governments at the earliest and ensure safe and secure environment for Kashmiri students, businessmen, labourers and others working in various states of the country. 

He said action must be taken against those found involved in intimidating innocent students from Jammu and Kashmir.

Failure to do so will swell anger and further alienate the general masses. The sooner it is done, the better, he said.

Aligarh (UP), Oct 12 (PTI) Three Kashmiri students of the AMU were suspended after they allegedly tried to hold a prayer meeting for Hizbul Mujahideen commander Manan Bashir Wani, who was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in north Kashmir, officials said Friday.
Some Kashmiri students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Thursday had gathered near Kennedy Hall in the campus to hold funeral prayers for Wani, following which the varsity staff and student union rushed to the spot and tried to stop them, AMU spokesperson and Professor Shafey Kidwai said Friday.

There was a heated exchange between the AMU Students' Union leaders and the Kashmiri students but they finally moved out of the area, Kidwai said, adding three Kashmiri students were suspended for trying to hold an unlawful gathering.

He said the university has made it clear that there was zero tolerance for any act which would even remotely be described as anti-national.

AMUSU president Faizul Hasan told PTI that he had always championed the cause of freedom of speech but any act of treason or terror was unacceptable to the union.

He said they will not allow the university to be defamed by any person who indulges in such unlawful activity.

Meanwhile, BJP lawmaker from Aligarh Satish Gautam said those trying to hold a prayer meeting for Wani at the AMU campus should be expelled. 

The 27-year-old Wani, who quit PhD studies in Allied Geology and joined the militant ranks in January this year, was killed at Shatgund village in Handwara area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district during the encounter on Thursday.
