New Delhi, Jan 9 : CBI Director Alok Verma joined office Wednesday, 77 days after he was sent on forced leave by the central government through a much-criticised late-night order on October 23, 2018, which was set aside by the Supreme Court.

The October order sent Verma and his deputy Special Director Rakesh Asthana, booked by the agency on corruption charges, into exile in a first-of-its-kind move by the government in the agency's history.

In sending Verma on leave, the government overlooked the immunity given to the CBI director by the Supreme Court ensuring a two-year minimum tenure to protect the incumbent from any political interference.

The government tried to justify its decision, saying it became necessary amid an unprecedented feud between the two senior-most officials of the agency who had levelled charges of corruption on each other, an argument rejected by the apex court Tuesday.

The government had given charge to then Joint Director M Nageswara Rao who was later promoted as additional director in the agency.

Verma had challenged the move in the Supreme Court which clipped the powers of Rao as director in-charge and barred him from taking any major policy decision till a final order comes from it.

In its order Tuesday, the Supreme Court set aside Verma's forced leave but restrained him from taking any major policy decision till the CVC probe into corruption charges against him is over.

In the absence of any clear definition of "major policy" decisions, the grey area exists as to what extent Verma's powers will be limited.

The apex court said any further decision against Verma, who retires on January 31, would be taken by the high-powered committee which selects and appoints the CBI director.

The Supreme Court in Vineet Narayan judgment had fixed a minimum tenure of two years for the CBI director to give him immunity from any political interference. Later, through Lokpal Act, the process of selecting the CBI director was handed over to a selection committee.

The selection committee comprises the prime minister, the leader of opposition and the chief justice of India.        PTI

Mumbai, Oct 13 (PTI) Actor Alok Nath and his wife Ashu Saturday filed a complaint in a local court seeking defamation proceedings to be initiated against writer-director Vinta Nanda for accusing him of rape.

In the complaint filed before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate, Nath and his wife sought a direction to the suburban Amboli police station to take cognisance of the letter sent by them in which they sought defamation proceedings against Nanda.

In a social media post Monday, Nanda had alleged that the actor had raped her 19 years ago. Although she did not name Nath in her post, she referred to him as the actor who is known as the "most Sanskari person" in the field of acting.

Nath is known for playing characters endorsing 'moral values' in films such as "Maine Pyaar Kiya", "Hum Aapke Hain Koun!", "Hum Saath Saath Hain" and "Vivah".

Nath's lawyer Ashok Sarogi, in a press conference on Thursday, had refuted the allegations and said they were baseless and devoid of any merit.

The complaint filed by the couple says, "The complainants (Nath and Ashu) have on October 12 addressed a letter to the Amboli police seeking action under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 of the Indian Penal Code against Nanda."

The police, however, said since the offences are non-cognisable in nature, it would be appropriate if an order is passed by the concerned court of law, it said.

"We are, hence, seeking the court to pass necessary direction to the Amboli police station in-charge to take cognisance of their complaint and hold an inquiry," the complaint said.

"The complainants have suffered grave and irreparable loss, harm and injury which could never be compensated in terms of money," the complaint read.

It added that because of Nanda's post, which although did not name Nath but subsequently he was named by others, Ashu and Nath have been victimised unnecessarily by way of defamation of their reputation in the society.

"Without commenting on anything about her (Nanda), the fact remains that all such occasions, such as the #MeToo campaign, are being encashed by way of utilising the social media for the purpose of either gaining some name and fame or for the purpose of defaming the reputation of a person," the complaint said.

It added that because of the "baseless allegations", Ashu and Alok Nath were "terrorised" to even step out of their house as people are looking at them with a "different attitude".

Actor Deepika Amin has claimed Alok Nath's reputation of an alcoholic and a harasser was common knowledge in the Hindi film and television industry.

Amin, who recently worked with Nath in "Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety", said several years ago the actor tried to "barge into her room" when they were shooting outdoors for a telefilm.

"Everyone in the industry knows that #AlokNath is an obnoxious drunkard who harasses women. Years ago on a telefilm outdoor shoot he tried to barge into my room. He slobbered over women, drunk and created a scene.

"The unit rallied around me and made sure I was safe. I was quite young but I still remember vividly how horrible he was," she wrote on Facebook Tuesday.

Amin, however, added that Nath came across "quiet and subdued" while filming "Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety".

"Maybe he has changed? Maybe because the director Luv Ranjan made it clear he wouldn't tolerate bad behaviour."

The actor said after "Tara" writer-producer Vinta Nanda came forward with her story, she was motivated to stand up for her.

"But after reading Vinta Nanda's heartbreaking account I felt I had to support her. BELIEVE WOMEN. They have everything to lose by speaking out," Amin wrote.

Actor Sandhya Mridul Wednesday opened up about her alleged sexual harassment at the hands of Nath during the shooting of a telefilm.

She accused Nath of trying to barge in her room in a drunken state.

"I instinctively tried to shut the door but he pushed it and lunged at me, I stepped aside he went flying past me into the room... I fell back toward the bathroom door he lunged at me again screaming I want you you're mine...

"I dodged again he went into the bathroom and I think I latched the loo door and ran out of my room down the corridor into the lobby."

Mridul said she got rid of him through the help of the crew but he continued to call her room every night.

She said despite being the victim of Nath's overtures, it was she who suffered because he spread lies about her being a difficult person to work with in Mumbai, where he wielded influence in the '90s.

Nath's lawyer termed the allegations "false" and called it an attempt to "purposely to malign his image".
