Mumbai, Jan 16 :  The elite runners in the competitive section of the 16th Tata Mumbai Marathon will make a lap of the Oval Maidan on the race's outward stretch on January 20.

Announcing the slightly altered route, Race Director Hugh Jones said this change will enhance the runners' overall experience as compared to the earlier years.

"The course is changed a bit. There is pretty much a full lap of the Oval Maidan.

"There will be a U-turn like in an athletic track," Jones said at a media conference here Wednesday.

He also said the casual runners will all finish at a different spot on the opposite side of the Azad Maidan in South Mumbai and not outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus which is both the start and finish point for the elite runners.

"There is a different finish for the open category runners, on the other side of the Azad Maidan.

But the overlap of slow runners with the elite ones at some stretches is inevitable even though the two starts are spread out.

"But there are also stretches where the elite athletes will have a clear run," he explained.

"We hope for a more exciting finish on Sunday," hoped Vivek Singh of race organisers Procam International.

A host of elite distance runners from Africa have entered the race along with top Indian runners like Asian Marathon men's champion Gopi T and Asian Games women's steeplechase medallist Sudha Singh.                                                              PTI

Mumbai, Jan 11 : Last year's top Indian finishers, T Gopi and Sudha Singh, and holder of the course record among home country men, Nitendra Singh Rawat, are all set to steal the show in the Tata Mumbai Marathon on January 20.

Asian champion Gopi and Rawat will face tough challenge in the men's race from Karan Singh, the best Indian finisher in 2014 and 2015, race organisers, Procam International, announced on Friday.

The 2017 Asian Champion (2:15:31) T Gopi's best performance came at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he clocked 2:15:25, the fastest by an Indian on foreign soil.

Rawat, who clocked 2:15:18 in the South Asian Games in 2016 and the national record holder in the half marathon is expected to be a strong challenger along with the recent Vasai Virar Marathon winner Karan, who clocked 2:22:17.

The women's contingent will be led by 2018 Asian Games steeplechase silver medalist Sudha Singh and two-time top Indian finisher, Jyoti Gawte.

Sudha has geared up for the 42.1 km race by bagging the second place amongst the Indian women at the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K in 2018 clocking 1:25:11.

Monika Raut, who bagged the second place in National Delhi Marathon 2016 and 6th place amongst Indian women at the Tata Steel 25K in 2017 with timings 2:55:39 and 1:36:08, will also be a strong contender in the women's field.

In the half marathon category, the men's group will be led by Kalidas Hirave and Man Singh.

In the women's half marathon category, Manju Yadav and Saigeeta Naik are among the primary contenders for a podium finish.

The top three Indian finishers stand to win Rs 5,00,000, Rs 4,00,000 and Rs 3,00,000 respectively in the full marathon and Rs 1,50,000, Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 75,000 in the half marathon. There is also a course record jackpot of Rs 2 lakh for the Indian runners.              PTI

Bengaluru, May 14 : Defending champion Alex Korio will defend his title at the TCS World 10K to be held here on May 27 and challenging him would be Geoffret Kamworor his compatriot and IAAF World Half Marathon Championships Valencia 2018 winner.
Korio, who also won this race in 2013, had a stunning 2017. In addition to winning in impressive fashion in Bengaluru when beating a world-class field by 14 seconds last May, he reduced his half marathon best to 58:51 in Copenhagen later in the year.
However, the 27-year-old Korio will come to the Indian race with a point to prove after having to drop out in the world championship event in Valencia back in March.
In addition to Korio and the 2012 and 2014 TCS World 10K champion Kamworor, another two-time winner in Bengaluru to return for this year’s race is Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew, who took the title in 2015 and 2016.
Geremew was among the favourites for last year’s race after his two previous wins but faded to 10th spot. However, his two outings so far this year have resulted in stunning victories, with him winning both the Yangzhou Half Marathon in China and the Dubai Marathon, the latter in a world-leading 2:04:00 which makes him the 12th fastest man ever over the classic distance.
Fellow Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase, who was just two seconds behind Geremew in Dubai to take the runners up spot there, will also be on the start line in Bengaluru while the fastest man in the field is another Ethiopian Birhanu Legese, who has had success in the past on Indian soil and twice won the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.
Leading the Asian challenge will be Bahrain’s Abraham Cheroben, who finished second behind Kamworor in Valencia. The Asian half marathon record holder is anticipated to be in contention for a place on the podium in Bengaluru.
A man who knows what it is like to climb the dais at the TCS World 10K is Kenya’s Edwin Kiptoo, second in 2017 and third in 2015, and he is aiming again to feature in the top three in Bengaluru.
The rest of women’s elite field for the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2018 that will do battle with Ethiopia’s Netsanet Gudeta (already announced), the IAAF World Half Marathon Valencia 2018 winner, will be announced early next week.

The TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2018, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, has a total prize fund of USD 213,000. It risen in prominence every year since it was inaugurated in 2008 and is now one of Asia’s leading races over the distance.
Approximately 27,000 runners will take to the roads for five different races in what has become one of Bengaluru’s most high-profile sporting events.
In addition to the TCS World 10K for elite runners, there is an Open 10K, the Majja Run (6km) the Senior Citizens’ Race and Champions with Disability Race (both 4km).
