Beijing, Jun 20 : China and Nepal today signed eight agreements for developing major infrastructure projects in the land-locked Himalayan nation to further deepen bilateral ties, media reports said.
China has been investing heavily in Nepal in the last few years to enhance the connectivity and infrastructure.
Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, who arrived here yesterday on his first official visit to China since his re-election, witnessed the signing of the agreements at the Embassy of Nepal here.
The agreements were signed between the government and private companies of Nepal and China to develop hydropower projects, cement industries, and establish highland food parks, The Himalayan Times reported in Kathmandu.
An agreement was signed between the Investment Board of Government of Nepal and Huaxin Cement Narayani Pvt Ltd under which the Chinese firm has pledged Rs 14.4 billion (USD 130 million) of FDI to generate 3,000 metric tonnes of cement per day, the report said.
Another MoU was signed to prepare a detailed feasibility study on Eastern Tarai Irrigation System in the Biring, Kamala and Kankai rivers, it said.
The two countries agreed on establishing the highland food park for varieties of fruits and vegetables with an investment of over USD 46 million, the report said.
They also agreed for the development of 164 MW Nepal Kaligandaki Gorge Hydropower Project which would be developed in BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) model, it said.
Furthermore, an agreement was signed for the construction of 40.27 MW Siuri Nyadi Hydropower Plant Project in EPCF (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Finance) model, the report said.
An agreement between Nepal Pashmina Industries Association and One Belt One Road International Trade Platform of CIC Mutual Trade Investment Company was signed for the sale of Nepali pashmina in China, the report said.
The purchase order from China would be between 200,000 to 500,000 pieces every year, it said.
A separate MoU on Framework Agreement for Cooperation in Marsyangdi Cascade Hydropower Project of 600 MW was also signed, it said.
The two sides also agreed for the Construction of 75 MW Trishuli Galchhi Hydropower Project in EPCF Model, the report added.
During his six-day visit, Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang and address a Nepal-China Business Forum and think-tanks in Beijing.
Oli's visit comes after his trip to India soon after his election as Prime Minister and followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's return visit to Kathmandu.
Oli, during his brief tenure in 2016 widened China-Nepal ties by signing the transit trade treaty with China to reduce the dependence of his land-locked country on India at the height of Madhesis agitation and sought expansion of road links through Tibet besides extension of China's railway to Nepal through the Himalayas. Kathmandu, Jun 19 : Land-locked Nepal is keen to enhance cross-border rail-road connectivity, infrastructure development, trade and tourism cooperation with China under its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has said.
Ahead of his first official visit to Beijing since his re-election, Prime Minister Oli said that his government is fully committed to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation under the framework of the BRI signed with China two years ago.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had unveiled the BRI in 2013 with an aim to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes.
India has not endorsed the BRI, a pet project of Xi, as the USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is part of the BRI, passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
India says it cannot accept a project that ignores its core concern on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Nepal attaches great value to its relationship with China which has always respected its sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence, Prime Minister Oli told China's state-run Xinhua news agency here.
China has signed pacts with nearly 80 countries and international organisations for the BRI.
In Beijing, Oli will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang, and is expected to sign major infrastructure projects to further deepen bilateral ties.
Nepal wants to discuss with China cooperation modality in implementing projects under the BRI framework during his visit to China, the prime minister said.
"Our two countries have common views on the concept of Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Transport Network. Based on this broad framework, we want to seek cooperation with China on cross-border connectivity of railway, road, transmission lines and other related areas for mutual benefit," Oli said.
Nepal viewes the BRI as an important development initiative, he said.
"China is our immediate neighbour. Our two countries share a long history of friendly relations which are multifaceted and deep rooted.
"Our relations are based on the solid foundation of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence," he said, reiterating Nepal's long-standing one-China policy.
He vowed not to allow the use of Nepali territory in engagement of any activities against China, in an apparent reference to Tibetan refugees in Nepal whom China considers to be dangerous separatists intended to destabilising the Tibet Autonomous Region.
"China has always respected Nepal's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence. It has been providing valuable assistance for Nepal's development efforts.
"Harmonious co-existence founded on the principle of good neighbourliness characterises our relationship. It has always been our sincere desire to maintain friendly relations with our neighbours," the prime minister said.
Oli said that he is looking forward to having substantive discussions with the Chinese leaders on ways and means to further widen and deepen bilateral relationship and areas of cooperation.
He believed that China can help a lot in his country's socio-economic transformation as Nepal is marching ahead to achieve economic prosperity at present.PTI
