Shimla, Oct 5 (PTI) Development is important but not at the cost of environment, Union minister Radha Mohan Singh said Friday.

He was addressing a conclave of chief ministers and parliamentarians of 12 Himalayan states here. The theme of the meet is "Wellbeing of the next generation of Himalayan people".

The conclave was inaugurated by Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.

The agriculture minister said climate change adversely affected the day-to-day life in the country in general and in Himalayan states in particular. The representatives of Himalayan states should hold a meeting with Niti Aayog to formulate a policy to tackle bad effects of climate change.

Rijiju stressed the need of cultivating specialised crops in Himalayan states to compete with other states.

He said violence in northeastern region has declined by 80 per cent since he became the union minister of state for home. 

The members of terrorist groups had been forced to surrender in northeastern states which resulted in considerable decline in violence there, he said, adding tourism would increase a lot in these states too.

Srinagar, Jul 18 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today raised with Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh the difficulties faced by around 60 Master of Veterinary Science (MVSC) aspirants. An official spokesperson here today said the Chief Minister spoke to the union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh and brought the difficulties of around 60 Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSC) pass outs from Kashmir Valley into his notice whose candidature for MVSC in different universities across the country is not being accepted without Post Doctoral Certificate. The Chief Minister requested the union Minister to look into the difficulties of these students, who could not get the said certificate due to disturbance in academic calendar last year in the Valley. The union Minister assured the Chief Minister that he would look into the problem of these students and necessary steps in this regard would be taken by his Ministry. “These students had got admission to MVSC course in various universities and colleges across the country but they were not in possession of the Post Doctoral Certificate. They had approached the Chief Minister office who had assured to look into their issues,” he added. UNI

‘Institute should focus on developing frontier technologies’


          SRINAGAR, JULY 05:  Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Radha Mohan Singh, visited Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture Srinagar to take stock of its functioning.  
          Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Minister of State for Agriculture Production, Sunil Kumar Sharma, Principal Secretary Agriculture Production, Sundeep Kumar Nayak, accompanied the Union Minister.
          The Union Minister was briefed about the working and achievements of the Institute and progress in the implementation of various schemes.    
          Speaking on the occasion, Radha Mohan Singh stressed on the plantation of trees along the border of agriculture fields, intercropping, commercialization of technologies and varieties developed by the Institute.
He also pointed out the need for cooperation and collaboration of the Institute with State Horticulture Department and SKUAST for better research and extension work.
          The Union Minister directed the concerned that institute should focus on developing frontier technologies and give prominence to technology commercialization.
          He also called for the need of paradigm shift for ensuring sustainable productivity in horticultural crops and conservation of local varieties. He asked the officers to ensure farmers are provided soil health cards to carry crop-wise recommendations of nutrients and fertilizers required for the individual farms to help farmers to improve productivity through the judicious use of inputs.
          The Union minister directed the CITH administration to speed up the process of finalization of the recruitment process to give a boost to its capacity building. He asked the employees of the institute to work with added zeal and dedication for the overall benefit of farmers of the State.

          Director CITH Dr D B Singh, Senior officers of Agriculture Department and other concerned were also present on the occasion.
