New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI)
One person was killed and three others were injured when they were hit by a train while crossing a closed level crossing in Ghaziabad Tuesday, a railway official said.

The incident happened at 8 am when a group of four were crossing the tracks even as the level crossing was closed for traffic.

The four were hit by the Dankor-Shakur Basti passenger train at gate no 153A.

"The incident happened between Ghaziabad and Chipyana. The gate was closed and they were trying to cross from beneath it. All the injured are being treated at Civil Hospital Ghaziabad," Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar said.

There were eight accidents at unmanned level crossings during the same period.

Lahore, Sep 16 : Pakistan's railways minister has proposed the sale of railway land to end nearly Rs 37 billion deficit and requested Prime Minister Imran Khan to promulgate an ordinance for the purpose.

Railways currently faces a deficit of Rs 37 billion as induction of new trains and high expenses take toll on the state-owned entity's revenue. With costs running high, and several Railways' assets unable to add to the company's bottom line, the entity has run into losses for years now, The Express Tribune reported.

"The prime minister has sought details of the precious land owned by the railways in different cities within a fortnight," Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said on Saturday.

Ahmad, the newly-appointed minister for railways, said all the land, which belongs to Pakistan Railways, would be retrieved from those who had grabbed it as the state-owned entity owns a huge amount of land but it is either been encroached or has not been used commercially.

However, "no action will be taken against dwellers of shanties on the railway land because of directives from the prime minister".

Describing the condition of Pakistan Railways' hospitals as deplorable, the minister said he was contemplating involving the private sector for bringing about improvement in the organisation but without compromising the rights of railway employees.

"We plan to run these hospitals under the public-private partnership mode. We are even ready to hand over control of these hospitals to the private sector on 'as-it-is' basis," he added.

Ahmad said that talks were under way to hand over control of all railway hospitals to the army medical corps. Talking about freight operations, the minister said Pakistan Railways was working internally to correct its freight business.

"Railways will try to improve things in the freight sector, we will wait for a month to see these improvements, later we will involve the private sector," he said, adding it would include opening one-window operations to facilitate people.

The minister said the railways had planned to run 12 to 15 additional freight trains. He sought government's directives for Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and other state-run organisations to use train services for their cargo delivery.

He said 318 acres of land would be acquired by Pakistan Railways in Gwadar while train services would be initiated for border posts of Taftan and Torkham to facilitate passengers and freight traffic.PTI

Mumbai, Jul 7 :  Over two weeks after the railway authorities requested the Maharashtra Environment Ministry to authorise them to act against the plastic ban violators and penalise them, they are still waiting for a response, officials said today.

A couple of days before the state-wide ban on plastic items came into force on June 23, the Central Railway (CR) as well as the Western Railway (WR) had made the request to the ministry.

"We had requested the state Environment Ministry to include railways in the list of authorities nominated for the implementation of the banned plastic items so that we can take action against the violators. We had made the request a couple days before the ban came into effect," a senior official of CR said.

"However, even after two weeks the state government is yet to respond to our request. Until and unless we are officially given power, we cannot collect fine from the violators," he added.

In their submission, the railway authorities had sought to know the list of banned plastic items and detailed guidelines about implementing the ban.

A WR official said they are also waiting for the government's green signal to implement the ban on its premises.

However, both the railways have taken up certain measures to discourage passengers from using plastic items on its premises and instructed the stall owners at the stations to avoid such products.

"All the stall owners, including the cafeteria operators, have been warned against using plastic and they are cooperating with us," the officials said.

The CR and the WR said they have already installed plastic bottle crushing machines at some stations on a pilot basis.

They will also float tenders to install additional plastic bottle crushing machines. While the CR plans to set up 35 such machines at 21 stations, the WR eyes to install 25 machines at 18 stations.

The state government had banned all kinds of plastic bags, irrespective of their thickness, tea cups, glasses, thermocol glasses, thermocol used for decoration, plastic used in hotels to parcel food like boxes, spoons from June 23.

The ban prescribed Rs 5,000 fine for the first-time offenders and Rs 10,000 for the second-time offenders. Those who violate the ban for the third time will face a fine of Rs 25,000, along with a three-month imprisonment.

However, four days later, the government had relaxed the stringent ban by allowing small retailers to use plastic bags for packaging for the next three months. The relaxation is applicable for plastic bags above 50 microns.PTI
