Visakhapatnam, Jul 12: Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari will launch various development projects under the Sagarmala and Bharatmala projects worth Rs 3,685.35 crore here tomorrow.
The minister, who is here on a two-day visit for the annual review of the country's port sector as well as the Sagarmala and Bharatmala projects, will inaugurate two new post Panamax Rail-Mounted Quay Cranes and allied equipment at the Visakhapatnam Container Terminal Private Limited.
They have been installed at a cost of Rs 150 crore, according to Visakhapatnam Port Trust chairman M T Krishna Babu.
Gadkari would also inaugurate the upgraded and modernised iron ore handling complex at VPT, built at a cost of Rs 580 crore under the public-private partnership model, the chairman said.
He would inaugurate a new fire station complex at VPT and a high-rise wall (to prevent pollution) and launch a 2,000 sapling plantation programme.
This Rs 10.35-crore project is a part of the VPT's measures to curb air pollution.
The minister would later drive to Beach Road in Visakhapatnam city to lay the foundation stone for a Rs 549-crore four-lane road connectivity project to the Visakhapatnam Port under the Bharatmala programme.
He would also lay the foundation stone for six-laning of Anandapuram-Anakapalle section of NH-16 that would cost Rs 2,013 crore.
Krishna Babu said Gadkari would inaugurate WQ 7 and 8 berths constructed at a cost of Rs 243 crore and inaugurate the expanded (two to four lane) stretch of port connectivity road (Rs 80 crore).
He would also lay the foundation for a grade separator on the road that would cost Rs 60 crore.
These three projects were being taken up by the VPT in a joint venture with the National Highways Authority of India, Krishna Babu added.
Gadkari would leave for Nagpur tomorrow night. (PTI)

Nov 1: Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh on Wednesday said
Olympic Silver Medalist and Brand Ambassador of Vizag Steel P V Sindhu is a new
generation sports personality and a pride to the country.
She is not just from Andhra Pradesh but represents the entire country. He has
envisioned a great future for her, he added. He made this observation while
inaugurating the “Badminton Coaching Camp” of RINL at Ukkunagaram.
Addressing the gathering here, Mr Singh commended highly RINL efforts in
promoting sports and infrastructure in Ukkunagaram as a good corporate citizen
and acting as a catalyst in sports development In and around this region. No
doubt, RINL has established its presence in the country as a quality steel
producer and is attaching great importance to sports too.
He suggested RINL explore the possibility of contributing to Water Sports in
its complex to add further to the sporting spirit. He mentioned that Steel
Ministry has constituted a committee to promote/encourage sports so that its
activities are prominently seen in the PSUs under the Ministry of Steel.
Mr Singh felicitated Sindhu for her achievements and contributions to sports
and promoting brand image of RINL-Vizag Steel as its Brand Ambassador in the
country and abroad.
Responding to the felicitations, Sindhu acknowledged the support of RINL in
strengthening sports and praised RINL for setting up the Badminton Coaching
Camp for the benefit of enthusiastic children. Hard work will always pay
dividends and children and sports persons should strive for achieving greater
heights, she added.
Later, the Union Steel Minister reviewed the performance of RINL and held
discussions with the top management headed by P Madhusudan, CMD. RINL Directors
and senior functionaries participated in the discussions.
The Minister was given a rousing reception on his arrival at Visakhapatnam. He
was accompanied by his wife Prema Latha Singh, MLA, Haryana Assembly, during

Delhi/Visakhapatnam, Oct 31: Vice Admiral Karambir Singh on Tuesday
assumed the charge of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command
(ENC) from Vice Admiral HCS Bisht in Visakhapatnam. Vice Admiral Singh
inspected the Ceremonial Guard and reviewed platoons of naval personnel drawn
from various ships and establishments of the ENC, the Indian Navy said in a
statement. His appointment came after Vice Admiral Bisht retirement from the
Naval Service on Tuesday. He was in Naval service for forty years. Vice Admiral
Bisht was accorded a farewell by the ENC by the traditional ‘Pulling Out’
ceremony, wherein he was ceremonially pulled out in a jeep by Flag Officers and
Commanding Officers of Ships and Naval establishments, to resounding ‘Teen Jais’
from the men to the outgoing Commander-in-Chief. Commissioned into the Indian
Navy in July 1980, Vice Admiral Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence
Academy, Khadakwasla, the Admiral earned his wings as a helicopter pilot in
1982 and has flown extensively on the Chetak and Kamov helicopters. He is a
graduate of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington; College of Naval
Warfare, Mumbai and has served as Directing Staff in both these Institutions.
In his career spanning over 37 years, the Admiral has commanded an Indian Coast
Guard Ship Chandbibi, Missile Corvette INS Vijaydurg as well as two Guided
Missile Destroyers INS Rana and INS Delhi. He has also served as the Fleet
Operations Officer of the Western Fleet. Ashore, the Admiral had served at Naval
Headquarters as the Joint Director Naval Air Staff, and as Captain Air and
Officer-in-Charge of the Naval Air Station at Mumbai. He has also served a
member of the Aircrew Instrument Rating and Categorisation Board (AIRCATS). On
promotion to flag rank, the Admiral was appointed as Chief of Staff, ENC. His
other important flag appointments include Chief of Staff of the Tri-Services
Unified Command at Andaman & Nicobar Islands and as the Flag Officer
Commanding Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area (FOMAG). UNI

Delhi/Visakhapatnam, Oct 16: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday
commissioned the indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS
Kiltan at the Eastern Naval Command. Kiltan is the latest indigenous warship
after Shivalik class, Kolkata class and sister ships INS Kamorta and INS
Kadmatt to have joined the Indian Navy's arsenal wherein a plethora of weapons
and sensors have been integrated to provide a Common Operational Picture (COP),
an official statement said. It is India's first major warship to have a
superstructure of carbon fibre composite material resulting in improved stealth
features, lower top weight and maintenance costs, it said. Navy chief Admiral
Sunil Lanba, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command H S
Bisht and other senior officers attended the event at the Naval Dockyard here.
"INS Kiltan strengthens our defence system and will be a shining armour in
our 'Make in India' programme as it is totally built here," Ms Sitharaman
said on the occasion. The stealth corvette has been designed by the Indian
Navy's in-house body, the Directorate of Naval Design under Project 28 (Kamorta
Class). INS Kiltan is also the first major warship to have undertaken sea
trials of all major weapons and sensors as a pilot project and is ready to be
operationally deployed on the day of joining the Indian Navy. In the future, it
would also be installed with short range SAM system and carry an integral ASW
