Srinagar, Nov 18: Separatist leader Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested on Saturday morning while
chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq was
put under house arrest since late Friday night.
There was also no relief for chairman of hardline HC Syed Ali
Shah Geelani who remained under house arrest for the past several months.
A spokesman for the JKLF said team of security
forces arrested Malik from his Maisuma residence near here this morning. He
said Malik was later shifted to central jail, Srinagar. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the HC said a large number
of security forces and state police have been deployed outside the Nigeen house
of Mirwaiz since last night. He said the chairman of the HC has been informed
that he cannot leave since he has been put under house arrest. Though no reason was given for putting him under house
arrest by the administration, it is believed that there was apprehension of
protests in Srinagar following death of a militant, a resident of down town, in
an encounter in Zakoora area in the city outskirts last evening. A police Sub
Inspector was also killed in the encounter and a Special Police Officer ( SPO)
was injured. A suspected militant was also arrested on the spot during the
encounter. UNI
