Chennai, Nov 24: The byelection to the high profile R K Nagar Assembly constituency in the city, which fell vacant following the death of former Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremeo J Jayallithaa, would be held on December 21.
A notification to this effect was issued by the Election Commission today following which the model code of conduct has come into force in the constituency with immediate effect. As per the notification, the filing of nominations would commence
on November 27. The last date for filing of nominations was December four and the
scrutiny would take place the next day. The last date of withdrawals was December seven and the polling would take place on December 21. The counting of votes would be taken up on December 24 and the entire election process will be completed by December 26, an official release here said. It may be recalled the EC has issued the notification for the bypoll, a day after allotting the hugely popular 'Two Leaves' symbol to the unified AIADMK headed by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami
and Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam, bringing to an end, the nearly nine-month long impasse after the party suffered a split. The Madras High court had suggested that RK Nagar seat should no longer remain vacant and wanted the bypoll to be conducted before December 31 this year.  UNI
