New Delhi, Jan 12: Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday acknowledged that China was a strong
force in the South Asian region but India was not weak.
Speaking at the Annual Press Conference of
Indian Army Day here, Gen Rawat said, “China is a powerful nation but we are
also not a weak nation either. China is exerting pressure but we are prepared
to deal with it. We will not allow our territory to be intruded or invaded.
There are some vulnerable areas in the northern front but we are keeping our
eyes and ears open.”
In an effort to maintain peace and tranquility at the border, the Army Chief suggested to further invigorate the diplomatic channels on with the Chinese administration. He also suggested that support from other nations can be taken as part of these efforts.
Further, Gen Rawat said that neighbours like Nepal, Srilanka, Afghanistan among others should not be allowed to drift away. However, he maintained that the military engagement with these nations was of great honour.
On being asked about the direct support of China to some terror outfits, he said, “As of now, we have not seen any direct support to terrorists from the Chinese. But they might be supporting psychologically by not recognizing Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.”
On guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC), he said, “Time has come now to focus on northern border. We have focused on the western border for two decades.”
On Tuting incident in Arunachal Pradesh, where Chinese civilians transgressed into Indian border to construct road in the region, Gen Rawat said, “The Chinese felt that they have ingressed into the Indian territory. We have a mechanism like Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) and resolved the issues.” UNI
