SHOPIAN, JUNE 22: In the backdrop of representations received from various quarters
regarding poor traffic management in the town, District Development
Commissioner Shopian Mohammad Aijaz today convened a meeting of line
departments and held a threadbare discussion in order to chalk out an effective
traffic management plan for the town.
The meeting was attended by Assistant Regional Transport Officer,
Executive Officer Municipality, Dy. SP Traffic Police and representatives of
Civil Society.
After 3 hours of deliberation and discussion, the meeting came up with
traffic decongestion plan and consequently, DDC passed an order in this regard
which read as, “Entry of the heavy vehicles and tractors in the town is hereby banned
from 8 AM to 6 PM. The alternate routes for plying during these hours shall
be through Sofannaman- Pinjoora to Habdipora.” Order
further read that executive officer Municipal Committee Shopian shall ensure
that unloading of goods & materials at shops shall take place during evening
hours.
A committee of ARTO, SHO, EO municipality and SO traffic police Shopian
has been constituted to look after the implementation of order in letter and
spirit He also directed the concerned officers to intensify drive against wrong
parking and idle parking.
It was given out at the meeting that due to the dearth of sufficient
parking space in the town, the shopkeepers park their vehicles alongside roads
which result in hour’s long jams and congestion in the town. To effectively resolve this
issue, the DDC directed executive officer municipality to identify land within
municipality limits where sufficient infrastructure could be created for car
parking.
