New Delhi, Aug 8 : The Congress today said currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 in different sizes and designs raised a question mark on the financial structure of the country and demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter. Addressing a joint press conference along with AICC media icnharge Randeep Surjewala, AICC spokesperson Kapil Sibal said, 'Currency notes of RS 500 and Rs 2000 are of different sizes and different designs. Yet all the security features of the currency notes indicate that they have been printed with the knowledge of the Reserve Bank of India and the Ministry of Finance. 'Nowhere in the world are currency notes of whatever denomination of different sizes. Different sizes of currency notes jeopardises the credibility of India’s currency and has huge global ramifications. Indian citizens will be confused about the authenticity of the currency. The availability of these currency notes in different sizes and different designs raises a question on the financial structure of the country . Prime Minister Narendra Modi should give an explanation in the matter,' he said. 'It is the responsibility that there should be one kind of Rs 500/Rs 2000 notes in the country. Country’s financial structure cannot be put into question,' he said. Mr Sibal said the government should clarify where the notes of significantly different sizes were printed. 'The Government should tell us in which printing press were the notes of different sizes and designs printed. Also they should tell the country whether they were printed in India or abroad. 'It is presumed that the dye for printing can only be of one size. Therefore, where were the dyes of different sizes prepared for the purpose of printing the currency notes, whether within or outside the country,' he said. Mr Sibal said he had raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha in the morning. 'We will continue to raise this issue in Parliament till the PM gives and explanation in the matter,' he said. The Congress had raised an uproar on the issue in the Rajya Sabha in the morning, forcing repeated adjournments of the House, the last one for the day. UNI
