Lucknow, Aug 9 : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today flagged off the 'Namami Gange Jagriti Yatra' and urged people to refrain from practices that pollute the Ganga river. "We should clean the rivers and make it pollution free. If we do not do so for Ganga and Yamuna, then in future large area in North India could face desert like situation," he added. Mr Adityanath said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was doing everything for cleaning of the Ganga from Gangotri to Gangasagar and even a new ministry has been set up. He also said that UP government has gone for a major plantation drive on the 150 kms river banks of the Ganga on July 5 last , while all efforts are being made for a cleaner Ganga during the coming 'Ardh Kumbh mela' at Allahabad in early 2019. Appealing to the people not to throw any articles in the rivers, the Chief Minister said,' It is the duty of people to save Ganga and Yamuna from pollution.' The function held at the Chief Minister's residence was also attended by couple of state ministers and saints. The Yatra would be flagged off by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat from Haridwar on August 11. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to make his presence in Varanasi to meet the people of this Yatra on September 1 while Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to welcome the yatra at Mirzapur on August 31. The yatra will visit 108 blocks of 25 districts of UP from Bijnore to Ballia on the banks of Ganga covering around 1,025 kilometers which will make people aware about the cleanliness of the river and other things. The yatra will end in Lucknow on September 6. Several ministers have been deputed at different places to welcome the yatra. UNI
