New Delhi, Sep 18: Delhi Police arrested an alleged Al-Qaeda operative Shami-ur-Rehman alias Shomon Haq from the national capital, who was trying to radicalise the Rohingyas Muslims, police said today.
The 27-year-old was nabbed yesterday by a special cell team near a bus stand in Shakarpur, at around 1800 hrs, on a tip-off.
The suspect was later produced before Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma, who sent him to police custody till
September 30.
According to police, Rehman was required for custodial interrogation to probe his links with the terror outfit and gather information on the other accused.
DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha said the Bangladesh-origin operative had been working with the terror outfit for the last four years.
Police have recovered a pistol, cartridges, a fake identity card (bearing the name of Shomon Haq, native of Kishanganj, Bihar), a Bangladeshi Sim Card, a laptop, Bangladeshi currency, US Dollars and other incriminating stuff from his possession, he added.
Mr Kushwaha said the operative was trying to set up a base in Mizoram or Manipur, where he was supposed to radicalise the Rohingya Muslims and urge them to fight against the Myanmarese Army.
Rehman is being quizzed about his alleged activities with the terror outfit, which he joined in South Africa.
He received three-months arms training in September 2013 at Atma province and went on to fight against the Syrian Army in Aleppo province, later.
The youth, born and brought up in Central London, came from an uptown British-Bangladeshi family, the DCP added.
The top brass of the global terrorist outfit had sent him to Bangladesh in 2014, where he radicalised around a dozen of Rohingya Muslims and was later arrested, Mr Kushwaha said.
He said after coming out on bail, Rehman fled to India and tried to operate from Mizoram.
Rehman was also in touch with people from West Bengal and Kashmir, the DCP added.  UNI
