Srinagar, Sep 26: Top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander was killed when alert troops foiled yet another infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI that troops noticed a militant sneaking into this side of border from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) at general area Zorawar in Uri sector early this morning.
However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militant opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
The security force retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said, adding the militant was killed in the encounter.
He said the operation was still going on and additional security forces have been rushed to sanitize the area.
Meanwhile, official sources told UNI that the slain militant has been identified as Qayoom Najar, who had exfiltrated to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 2015 and was returning to take command of HM in Kashmir.
They said Najar allies Jansahib, a resident of Mumkak Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, was an active militant since 1999.
They said the killed commander was sent by United Jehad Council Commander Syed Salahudin to revive HM, whose commanders in north Kashmir, Pervaiz Wani allies Mubashir and Yasin Yatoo, were killed recently in separate encounters with security forces.
“The slain militant was involved in killing of dozens of civilian, police and security forces personnel,” they said.
They said the militant was also involved in number of IED blasts carried out by HM in north Kashmir, including Sopore, Pattan, Handwara and Baramulla.
“He briefly fell out with HM in 2015 when he orchestrated multiple attacks on mobile towers and killing of some civilians affiliated with Hurriyat Conference (HC). He was recalled to base camp in Muzaffarabad, PoK to sort out the differences,” they added.
