Sept 9: Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat will be on a visiting the
district tomorrow to attend a martyrdom programme. According to sources here
today the Army chief will take part in the 52nd martyrdom anniversary programme
of Late CQMH Abdul Hamid at his ancestral village Dhamupur in Ghazipur
district. He will also meet the martyr's family . Hamid posthumously received
India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra, for his sacrifice
during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. On September 10, 1965, Pakistani armour
supported by Patton tanks attacked 4 Grenadier's position. Hamid succeeded in
destroying three tanks heading towards his battalion defences. India set up a
war memorial named `Patton Nagar' in Khem Karan district, where captured
Pakistani Patton tanks are displayed. UNI
