Delhi, Sept 27: The Centre today announced one of its biggest initiatives
for police modernisation unveiling a Rs 25,060 crore umbrella scheme to
strengthen internal security. The scheme was approved at a meeting of the
Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The money would be spent over three years,
and there was a special package for Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas
and the North-East, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said at a media briefing after
the meeting of the CCS. Under the scheme, states would be provided 2.5 times of
the previous provision. Their share in the scheme will be Rs 6,444 crore. The
35 worst LWE-affected areas would be given a special Central assistance of Rs
3000 crore, and Rs 100 crore had been earmarked for North-Eastern states. There
are special provisions for internal security, law and order, women’s safety,
