Srinagar, Sep 4 : Even though there was no official holiday today,
people are still in Eid mood in Kashmir Valley, where majority parks and
gardens, including those on the bank of Dal Lake, are flooded with children and
other tourists.
However, elders are still busy distributing meat of animals sacrificed on Eid-ul-Azha, being celebrated since September 2, marking the culmination of the annual pilgrimage to the holy Mecca and remembering the sacrifice of Hazrat Abraham.
Majority media offices remained closed for the second consecutive day today in view of Eid in the valley, where not a single local newspaper hit the stands since yesterday.
Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated on September 2, when several areas witnessed clashes between demonstrators and security forces after Eid prayers.
Meanwhile, heavy rush of people, particularly youngsters and children, could be seen enjoying train rides, which were resumed today after remaining suspended for security forces for two days. People could also be seen visiting their relatives and friends since early this morning with meat of animals sacrificed.
Children, in colourful dresses, could be seen visiting parks in their respective areas, celebrating Eid as tomorrow they again have to go schools. A large number of children were also seen enjoying rides set up by private individuals at open spaces and parks. Majority of the private educational institutions have announced holiday today also.
Vendors have set up their stalls, selling toys and crackers besides eatables for the children visiting parks and gardens. People were also seen enjoying Shikara ride in the world famous Dal Lake in the city.
Even though the government offices and banks were open but attendance of employees was very less. There were also no customers, said the bank employees who had attended the office today.
A number of media offices, including local newspapers remained closed for the third day today as employees are still celebrating Eid. However, local offices of national and international media organisations, including news agencies and electronic TV channels were open.
People alongwith their family members were also seen visiting Mughal gardens, including Nishat, Shalimar, Cheshmashahi and Harwan.
Majority shops in the main business hubs, including historic Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), Regal Chowk, Moulana Azad road, Residency road, Batmaloo and Dalgate remained closed even today. Similar reports were also received from other parts of the Kashmir valley.
There was no local newspaper today as all media offices remained closed yesterday in view of the Eid festival, affecting daily morning programme, based on newspaper headlines, on Radio Kashmir, Srinagar and Doordarshan, Srinagar. UNI
