BARAMULLA, SEPTEMBER 21: Jammu and
Kashmir State Commission for Women (SCW) today organized an awareness camp on
gender issues highlighting various aspects of women’s rights
and legislations meant to protect them at Government Degree College, Baramulla.
Chairperson SCW, Nayeema Mehjoor was the chief guest where as District
Development Commissioner Baramulla, Dr Nasir Ahmad Naqash was the guest of
honor at the day-long awareness camp. A large number of girl students from
various educational institutions of the district were also present on the
occasion.
Mehjoor, who is on a 2-day visit to the district, highlighted that dowry-related
violence, domestic violence, eve teasing are manifestations of various forms of
social evils through which a woman suffers immensely. She detailed various
provisions of the constitution and legislations by virtue of which they can be
redressed.
She termed awareness as a necessary tool to safeguard rights of women.
She said education is pivotal for girls so that they can lead a dignified life.
She said that discrimination is the main cause for destabilization of social
structure and stressed upon various women-friendly initiatives.
The DDC hailed the concerned for organizing such a camp and stressed for
organizing such camps in far-flung areas of the district. He urged women to
recognize their role in the society and assured safeguarding of women rights as
his administration’s priority. He also said that women have excelled in various fields and
there is need to empower them.
