New Delhi,
Sept 7: The Supreme Court today granted six weeks' time to the Central
Government for resolving the issue between the two states -- Haryana and Punjab
-- in connection with the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal matter. During the
course of the hearing today in the SYL canal case, Attorney General (AG) K K
Venugopal, country's top law officer representing the Central Government,
sought more time and told the apex court that the issue was being discussed by
both the states -- Punjab and Haryana -- for a meaningful settlement, so
thereby the Union of India needed more time in the matter. To which, the apex
court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra
granted the Central Government six weeks for a meaningful settlement between
both the states -- Punjab and Haryana -- in the case. The three-judge bench of
the apex court, also comprising Justice Amitava Roy and Justice AM Khanwilkar,
was hearing the SYL canal issue. The apex court today fixed the matter for
further hearing till November 8. The Supreme Court last year in November, in
its order, had held as null and void the 2004 law passed by it to terminate the
SYL canal water sharing agreement. The apex court pronounced the judgement on
the presidential reference of 2004 on the controversy relating to sharing of
water from the SYL canal by the north Indian states. UNI
