Srinagar, Oct 11: Two Air Force Garud personnel and as many Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants
were killed in a fierce encounter in north Kashmir district of Bandipora on Wednesday.
This is for the first time that Air Force Garud personnel were killed in an operation against militancy since the eruption of militancy in early 90s.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI that following specific information about presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and Paramilitary forces cordoned off Rakh Paribal, Hajin, in Bandipora district at 0500 hrs on Wednesday.
He said the Air Force Garud personnel were also operating with the Army for operational experience and training.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the cordoned off village, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons and lobbed hand grenades.
Col Kalia said two Air Force Garud personnel, identified as Sergeant K Milind Kishor and Corporal Nilesh Kumar Nayn, were martyred in the initial firing.
Security forces also retaliated in which two militants were killed, he added.
Official sources said that the slain militants have been identified as Abu Bakr allies Ali Baba, a resident of Pakistan, and Nasrullah Mir, a resident of Hajin. “Both the militants belong to LeT outfit,” they added.
Meanwhile, the Defence spokesman said that Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks salute the martyrs and offer condolences to the bereaved families.
He said the operation has been called off after proper sanitization of the area.
With this, 11 militants have been killed in Bandipora district this year. Four security personnel and two IAF garud personnel have also lost their lives during these operations.

“Both the slain militants were involved in many attacks, including the killing of a BSF jawan Mohammad Ramzan and injuring four of his family members at his home in Bandipora last month,” he said.
He said they were also involved in an attack on patrolling party in which an Army captain and two jawans were injured in the district.
He said Mir was also involved in stone pelting incidents. UNI
