Oct 25: The ruling Congress party in Meghalaya is gearing up to prepare
itself for the next year assembly elections due next year. AICC general
secretary CP Joshi, in-charge Meghalaya, is scheduled to arrive here tomorrow
to discuss the party’s strategy and preparedness for assembly elections. Mr
Joshi is expected to meet Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president DD
Lapang, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and other senior party leaders. On
Wednesday, the Congress leader will meet the presidents of Block Congress
committees, district Congress presidents, party legislators, district and MPs
to discuss the poll preparedness. During the meeting, the Congress leaders will
also discuss on the exodus of the party members and the move of the four sitting
Congress legislators to contest the next year assembly polls on opposition
National People’s Party ticket. Former deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh,
former PHE Minister Prestone Tynsong, former power minister Sniawbhalang Dhar
and Ngaitlang Dhar are planning to contest the assembly elections on NPP. Khasi
Hills Autonomous District Council chief executive member P.N. Syiem was also
vocal against the style and functioning of the chief minister which ultimately
led to his suspension from the party for three years. UNI
