Kolkata, Oct 24: The West Bengal Food and Supplies department will set up district-level monitoring committees in all the districts of Bengal to monitor the distribution of essential foodgrains across the state. The committee will also ensure that the people are getting quality foodgrains. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s brainchild ‘Khadya Sathi’ has brought a revolution across the state as 8.34 crore people from Bengal have already been covered under this scheme. Around 91 per cent of the state’s total population is getting rice and wheat at a subsidised rate of Rs 2 per kg. Earlier, the department had a capacity of storing 62,000 metric ton foodgrains but many more godowns have come up with a total capacity of holding more than six lakh metric tonne of foodgrains. The department has a target of setting up godowns with a total capacity of 14 lakh metric tonne. The State Government has also increased the allotment of fund for procuring more foodgrains. UNI
