Kolkata, Apr 15 :  Unhappy over the way the lockdown is being enforced in West Bengal, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar Wednesday said police and civil officials not following protocol be shown the door and deployment of central paramilitary forces be considered, drawing a sharp reaction from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who advised Raj Bhavan to eschew politics in times of crisis.

"Lockdown protocol has to be thoroughly implemented to ward off #coronavirus. Police and administration @MamataOfficial failing to effect 100% #SocialDistancing or curbing religious congregations be shown door," Dhankhar tweeted.

"Lockdown must succeed-examine central para forces requisitioning!" the governor added.

The governor's remarks did not go down well with the chief minister, who smelt politics in them.

Why do we need paramilitary forces? There have been instances where military personnel themselves have been infected with the virus. Some people are trying to fish in troubled waters. I would urge everybody this is not the time for politics. This is a crisis situation, Banerjee said, but did not name the governor.

The Union Home Ministry had also recently flagged "gradual dilution" of the lockdown in some parts of the state.

Most of these localities are minority-dominated, and the state BJP unit has repeatedly alleged that lockdown was not being properly enforced in these areas.

The home ministry also said despite the Centre issuing orders from time to time under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, these were not being followed.

Reacting to the Centre's letter, Banerjee had said the Union government was only interested in "extra vigilance in some specific areas".

"We are not fighting any communal virus, we are fighting a disease spreading through human contact. Wherever we find any problem, steps will be taken to ensure that the lockdown is imposed there, but that doesn't mean shops would remain closed... We are keeping a close watch," she had said.

Dhankhar has been at loggerheads with the state government over a host of issues ever since taking office in July last year.

Kolkata, Mar 25 :  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday sought a Rs 1,500 crore package from the Centre to support the state government's efforts to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking to reporters through video-conference from the state secretariat, Banerjee said the Centre should provide a special package as the state is finding it difficult to do "everything" with its "limited resources".

"We had made the same request at the all-party meeting two days back. The Centre should announce a special financial package for the state in the current situation," she said.

The chief minister said that while the state has created a Rs 200-crore fund, it is inadequate to procure all necessary equipment such as ventilators.

Banerjee said the Centre should work out special economic packages for all the states affected by the pandemic.

She also appealed to the corporates, industrialists and other organisations in the state to donate to the relief fund to effectively tackle the disease.

Responding to a question, she said the state government has the right to decide on certain provisions of the National Disaster Management Act and a call will be taken on whether some of them can be relaxed after reviewing the situation on March 31.

The Act has been invoked by the Centre without consulting the states "but we will later on decide which provision should be enforced and which not", Banerjee said.

She said people engaged by online platforms for delivery of food items, vegetable vendors and those in other essential services should not be stopped by police during the lockdown.

Farmers working in fields usually maintain distance between each other and there is no reason they should not be allowed to work, the chief minister said.

If required, passes should be issued to people employed for home delivery services, she said.

Banerjee warned of action if policemen were found stopping people working in essential services, while praising the forces for its overall role in enforcing the lockdown.

"Some policemen at the lower level, civic volunteers, should also be sensitised by their superiors that those involved in essential services, like vegetable vendors, online food delivery boys, farmers should not be stopped," she said.

"Social distancing doesn't mean social isolation," the chief minister said.

She also warned of stern action if doctors, nurses and health workers are harassed by their neighbours.

Banerjee said that if someone runs out of food during the lockdown, the person should get in touch with the respective Block Development Officer.

She said there is no need to panic as the state has enough food grain in stock.

The government will provide one month's ration of rice to everyone and also give social pension to the poor so that no one faces the pinch of the lockdown, she said.

"Neighbourhood grocery stores will remain open and they will be able to source commodities from nearby markets that will function for a stipulated time," she said.

The chief minister urged people to maintain distance while buying essential items from ration shops or grocery stores.

She also said that a control room to monitor the emerging situation will work 24x7 in three shifts, having a nodal officer in each shift.

Banerjee said the task force formed by the state government is keeping a close tab on the entire situation, including the availability of essentials in the market.

Kolkata, Mar 24 :  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday extended the ongoing lockdown in force in Kolkata and other urban areas of West Bengal to the entire state till March 31 to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

"After assessing the situation, it has been decided that the ongoing lockdown will be extended to the entire state from 5 pm today," Banerjee told a press conference.

The lockdown in Kolkata and several urban agglomerations had begun on Monday and was scheduled to continue till March 27 midnight.

Kolkata, Jan 27 :  The West Bengal Assembly Monday passed a resolution against CAA brought by the state government demanding that the contentious citizenship law be repealed forthwith and NPR and the proposed NRC be withdrawn.

Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Citizenship Amendment Act is "against the Constitution and humanity".

"We want this law to be repealed immediately. We want NPR to be also repealed," Banerjee said.

The resolution was supported by both the opposition parties Congress and the CPI(M) led Left Front.

The BJP legislature party opposed the resolution and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the CAA to help refugees get their citizenship of the country.

Kerala, Rajasthan and Punjab too have passed resolutions against the new citizenship law.

The amended citizenship law has emerged as the latest flashpoint in the West Bengal with TMC opposing the contentious legislation tooth and nail and BJP pressing for its implementation.

The state assembly had earlier passed a resolution against NRC in September 2019. The BJP had naturally not supported it.

Kolkata, Jan 17 :  Citing "preoccupations" West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will not attend an all- party meeting called by Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday, to discuss issues pertaining to two bills, a Raj Bhavan official said here.

The Chief Minister's Office informed the Governor's Secretariat that on account of preoccupations on Friday, it will not be possible for Banerjee to attend the meeting, the Raj Bhavan said in a statement on Thursday.

Dhankhar has been engaged in a face-off with Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress, over a host of issues since assuming charge as the governor of the state.

The meeting was called by the governor to discuss two bills passed by the Assembly, which are awaiting his assent.

The statement said that "on account of there being no inputs from the state government and the state Legislative Assembly in spite of repeated efforts" with regard to the pendency of 'The West Bengal (Prevention of Lynching) Bill, 2019 and 'West Bengal State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2019', the meeting had been convened by the governor.

"The Governor has urged the Chief Minister to give priority to this matter and spare time at the earliest" for a meeting on these issues," it said.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Abdul Mannan, and Left Front Legislature Party leader Sujan Chakraborty have requested that the meeting be held on January 21, the statement said, adding that it will be scheduled on that date.

The Raj Bhavan has also been informed that the Leader of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Rohit Sharma, is currently bedridden, it said.

Kolkata, June 23 :    West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the death of 14 people due to collapse of a pandal during a religious programme in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Sunday.

"Saddened at the deaths after the tent collapse in Barmer, Rajasthan. My condolences to the grieving families.

Our prayers that the injured recover quickly," Banerjee said in a tweet.

At least 14 people were killed and about 50 injured after a pandal fell on them due to strong winds and heavy rains during a religious programme in Barmer district of Rajasthan.

A 'Ram Katha' was organised at a school ground near Rani Bhatiyani temple in Jasol area of the district. The pandal was uprooted by strong winds, trapping the people sitting under it, police said, adding hundreds of devotees were attending the programme.                  [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 17 :  The protesting doctors in West Bengal on Monday agreed to withdraw their week-long stir after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced steps to scale up security at hospitals

An assurance to call off the strike came at a meeting Banerjee held with representatives of the striking doctors at the state secretariat

"We are satisfied with the meeting," a representative of the doctors said, assuring Banerjee that the strike is going to be called off

A formal announcement on withdrawal of the strike is likely to be made from the epicentre of the protest, the NRS Medical College and Hospital.                       [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 15 :  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday that the West Bengal government had not invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) even after five days of strike by the junior doctors and appealed to them to immediately rejoin service.

"We have the laws, but we do not want to use them.... We are not going to take any stringent action against any of the agitating junior doctors and hamper their career," she said at a news conference after the agitating doctors did not turn up for a meeting at 5 pm.

Under the ESMA, employees in a long list of "essential services" like post, railway, airport and port operations are prohibited from going on strike.

Banerjee cited instances of steps taken against doctors in similar situation by other states, adding that the West Bengal government had not taken any tough action against them as she does not want to hamper their careers.

The chief minister said the state government had accepted all the demands of the doctors and was ready to accept more, but she added that they must resume work.

"On Friday, I waited for the junior doctors for five hours. And today, I cancelled all my programmes for them. You must show some respect to the constitutional body," she said.

On the mass resignation of the doctors across the state, Banerjee said it was not legally tenable.

"If the junior doctors think I am incapable, they can always talk to the governor or the chief secretary... or the commissioner of police," she said.

The agitating doctors had earlier turned down an invite for a closed-door meeting with Banerjee at the state secretariat on Saturday, and instead asked her to visit the NRS Medical College and Hospital for an open discussion to resolve the impasse.                              [Agencies]

New Delhi, Jun 15  :   Patients in the national capital faced hardships for the second consecutive day as protest by doctors, in solidarity with their striking colleagues in Kolkata, spread to several government hospitals on Saturday.

Doctors at the Centre-run Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital, and RML Hospital, and Delhi government's healthcare facilities such as GTB Hospital, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital and DDU Hospital, boycotted work and held protests.

However, emergency and ICU services were not hampered in these hospitals.

Meanwhile resident doctors of AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, who resumed work after having boycotted it on Friday, have given a 48-hour ultimatum to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to meet the demands of the state's agitating doctors, failing which they said they would go on an indefinite strike.

They attended patients wearing helmets and bandages on forehead as a sign of protest. AIIMS resident doctors will also take out a candle march in the campus in the evening.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asked states to consider enacting a specific legislation for protecting doctors and medical professionals from any form of violence.

Along with a letter to all chief ministers, he also attached a copy of the Draft Act provided by IMA --the Protection of Medical Service Persons and Medical Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss of Property) Act, 2017.

The move comes after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) launched a four-day nationwide protest from Friday and wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding enactment of a central law to check violence against healthcare workers in hospitals, and making such crimes non-bailable offence.

The apex doctors body has called for a nationwide strike on June 17 with withdrawal of non-essential health services.

Patients bore the brunt of the protest, as they faced a lot of inconvenience and had to wait for long hours at hospital OPDs.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman who visited Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital for follow-up check up claimed that she could not find a doctor in the OPD.

"My ultra-sound is due. I always come here for check-up but today I could not find a doctor to consult with. Now I have to go somewhere else but I have learnt that protests are on at other hospitals too. We patients are facing lot of discomfort because of this strike," she said.

On Friday, a majority of hospitals in Delhi had joined the country-wide agitation in support of the doctors in West Bengal, on a call given by the India Medical Association (IMA) and various resident doctors' associations (RDAs).

However, many hospitals could not join the protest on June 14 as they had not submitted the 24-hour advance notice to the government as required by protocol.

So, they are observing a bandh on Saturday, President of Federation of Residents Doctors' Association (FORDA) Sumedh Sandanshiv said, adding however, ICUs and emergency wings of these hospitals are functioning.

In a statement, FORDA said they would be forced to go on an indefinite strike if the issue in West Bengal is not resolved.

There was a shutdown of out patient departments (OPDs), routine operation theatre services and ward visits, except emergency services at these hospitals of the city, where doctors held their token strike on Saturday.

Junior doctors in West Bengal are on a strike since Tuesday after two of their colleagues were attacked and seriously injured allegedly by relatives of a patient who died at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

A forum of doctors in the national capital issued a statement holding the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal "squarely responsible for letting the situation snowball to the present state through sheer lack of sensitivity for concerns expressed by junior doctors".

It appealed to the resident doctors to include the healthcare issues concerning the common people in their struggle and asked the TMC government to "stop politicising on the issue and address the demands raised by doctors in the earnest".

Scores of doctors in Delhi had held demonstrations on Friday, with many attending to patients in emergency wards wearing bandages on forehead or helmets, marching and raising slogans.                                                                                             [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 14 : Agitating doctors Friday demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's unconditional apology and set six conditions for the state government to withdraw their four-day-long stir that disrupted healthcare services across West Bengal.

"We want unconditional apology of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the manner in which she had addressed us at the SSKM Hospital yesterday. She should not have said what she had," a spokesperson of the joint forum of junior doctors, Dr Arindam Dutta, said.

While visiting the SSKM Hospital on Thursday, Banerjee had contended that "outsiders" had entered medical colleges to create disturbances and the agitation was a conspiracy by the CPI(M) and the BJP.

Listing the six conditions, the agitators said the chief minister will have to visit the injured doctors at the hospital and her office should release a statement condemning the attack on them.

"We also want immediate intervention of the chief minister. Documentary evidence of judicial enquiry against the inactivity of the police to provide protection to the doctors at the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital on Monday night should also be provided," he said.

Two junior doctors were assaulted on Monday night by family members of a patient who died in the NRS Hospital.

"We demand documentary evidence and details of action taken against those who had attacked us," Dutta said.

They also demanded unconditional withdrawal of all "false cases and charges" which were imposed on junior doctors and medical students across West Bengal in the wake of their strike.

They also stressed on their demand for improvement of infrastructure in all health facilities as well as posting of armed police personnel there.                             [Agencies]

Arambagh (WB), Apr 23 :
Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Tuesday alleged that the central forces were working for the BJP by asking voters in Maldaha Dakshin and Balurghat constituencies, where polling is underway, to cast their votes for the saffron party.

Pointing out that the central forces do not have the right to ask voters to vote for BJP candidates, Banerjee said the Election Commission has been apprised of it.

"I have got information that the central forces are sitting inside booths in Englishbazar in Maldaha Dakshin and asking voters to vote for the BJP. They do not have the right to do such thing. We have informed the Election Commission about our reservations regarding this," she said.

"Why are they (central forces) doing it? The police cannot enter a polling booth," she added.

She said that the central forces could come to a state during the elections but they should work with the assistance of the state force and then leave.

Criticising the BJP for allegedly using the central forces, she said, "You cannot use the central forces. You did the same thing during the 2016 (assembly) elections in West Bengal. I have not forgotten it."

West Bengal will teach the BJP an apt lesson, she claimed.

Central forces have been deployed at over 92 per cent of the booths in the third phase of the polling in five Lok Sabha constituencies on Tuesday.           [Agencies]

Kolkata, Feb 26 :  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday hailed the Indian Air Force (IAF) for carrying out air strikes in Pakistan.

"IAF also means India's Amazing Fighters. Jai Hind," Banerjee tweeted.

India carried ou t air strikes inside Pakistan early Tuesday and targeted terror camps, official sources said.

Several fighter jets of the Indian Air Force successfully destroyed camps belonging to Pakistan-basedterror outfits in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, they said.                  [Agencies]

Kolkata, Feb 25 :  Accusing the Modi government of indulging in "politics over dead bodies of jawans" after the Pulwama terror attack, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday alleged the Centre had intelligence inputs that such an attack can take place but did not act upon them.

Banerjee claimed the BJP-led Union government wants to create a "war hysteria" ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to draw political mileage.

Rejecting the allegations, the BJP said counter-accused her of trying to score "political brownie points" with her statements.

Addressing the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) extended core committee meeting here, Banerjee alleged that in the last over four-and-a-half years, the BJP, along with forces like the VHP and the RSS, has tried to divide the country on religious lines by injecting the "poison of hatred and communalism among the masses".

She vowed to oust the "dictatorial Narendra Modi government" from power in the upcoming general election.

The TMC supremo, who had organised a conclave of over two dozen anti-BJP parties at the iconic Brigade Ground here on January 19, is all set to attend a crucial meeting of the opposition parties in Delhi later this week.

She also claimed that the TMC will win all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said, "What were you doing Modi babu when the Pulwama attack took place? You had prior information about it. The central government was aware that such an attack can take place, there were intelligence inputs."

"Then why didn't the government take action to protect our jawans. The government allowed them to die so that they can do politics over the dead bodies of jawans in the elections," the chief minister said.

"Why did they not sanitise the road taken by the CRPF jawans? Why were the jawans not airlifted that day? Why were the troopers left to die? Is it because you wanted to politicise the matter before the elections?," she asked.

"The blood of our jawans should not be politicised in this way. They want to create a war hysteria ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. They want to create an atmosphere of war and gain politically," she said condemning the attacks.

On February 14, 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed in Jammu and Kashmir after a Jaish-e-Mohammed militant rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into their bus in Pulwama district.

Reacting to Banerjee's comments, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh criticised her and said she is making baseless allegations about Pulwama terror attack with an intent to politicise the issue.

"Is this is the first time that such a terror attack has taken place in Kashmir? She should stop making such allegations just for scoring political brownie points," he said.

Ghosh also asked Banerjee to keep aside her prime ministerial ambitions and stop dreaming about ousting Modi.

"TMC is fast losing ground in Bengal and she is dreaming about ousting Modi. She should be rest assured about her defeat in Bengal in the Lok Sabha polls," Ghosh said.

Criticising those taking out bike rallies with national flags in the middle of the night over the Pulwama attack and beating up people in the name of nationalism, Banerjee said action will be taken against such elements as only "criminals and dacoits" take out their bikes at midnight.

"The VHP, RSS and the BJP are such forces which have not only tried to divide the country on religious lines but has also infused the poison of communalism and hatred among the masses. We have to remove this dictator Narendra Modi and Amit Shah from power to save the country," she said.

The central government is functioning in a peculiar way and Union ministers are not aware of important decisions, Banerjee claimed, adding that the government is being run by "two brothers", who have the blood of innocents on their hands.

"Those who claim to be leader on their own are not leaders. A person who is respected, loved and appointed as leader by others is the real leader," Banerjee said, taking a veiled dig at Modi and Shah for frequently alleging that the opposition alliance doesn't have a leader.

She also accused the Modi government of pursuing vendetta politics.

Being seen as a key force in bringing together opposition parties, she supported a collective leadership of the anti-BJP alliance.

Taking a dig at Shah's claim that the BJP will win more than 23 seats in Bengal, Banerjee alleged that the saffron party will try to tamper with the EVMs to reach its target and hence, is making such claims.

"We have to be cautious and thwart those efforts",she added.

Banerjee alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to buy her party leaders by offering them cash and have been contacting her party leaders in this regard.

"There are people coming via train to Bengal and bringing loads of cash into the state. This is for spending it on voters. I have all the information", she claimed.

She asked party workers to not pay heed to the proposed alliance between the CPI(M) and the Congress in the state, and said both parties may even have a covert understanding with the BJP to fight the TMC in some places.

The CPI(M) and Congress had forged an alliance in the 2016 assembly polls against the TMC in Bengal. But,it failed to have an impact as the TMC won 211 seats in the state.              [Agencies]

Kolkata, Feb 17 :  Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh on Sunday alleged that the West Bengal government is being run like a private company by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, creating an atmosphere of fear and threat in the state.

He also said the West Bengal government has violated all democratic norms by misusing powers, and is "running a syndicate" in the state.

"Mamata Banerjee has broken all political ethics and running her government by creating an atmosphere of fear and threat. Going by the situation in West Bengal, it seems that there are only two people -- Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee -- are leading the government like a private company," Singh told reporters here.

Referring to Banerjee's recent dharna to protest CBI's action against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with the Saradha chit fund probe, he said that such an incident had never happened in the history of the country, and democracy in West Bengal is being violated by misuse of power.

"When the CBI, as a part of its investigation into the Saradha scam, called up the police commissioner, it comes under attack and its officers are arrested.

"What Mamataji did here is the biggest example of violation of democracy in the country's history by the misuse of power. These types of incidents show that syndicate raj is being operated in entire West Bengal," Singh claimed.

Referring to alleged incidents of violence and killings during last year's panchayat elections in West Bengal, Singh said that human rights were violated, and law and order deteriorated in the state.

"West Bengal has become a centre of human trafficking, arms smuggling and fake currency production. People are entering the country under total guidance and assistance of the state government and getting citizenships," the former Chhattisgarh CM said.

On Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu's comments on the Pulwama attack, Singh said the cricketer-turned-politician would never he pardoned by the country.

"I can say that he (Navjot) has hurt the sentiments of the people of the country. I think the country will not pardon Sindhu," Singh said.

Sidhu had on Friday condemned the Pulwama terror strike that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel, but wondered if entire Pakistan should be held responsible for terrorist activities patronised on its soil.       Agencies
