Srinagar, Nov 27: Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in the downtown, Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and areas falling under two police stations in the civil lines and old city since early Monday morning.
The historic Jamia Masjid was again closed for devotees and large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed to prevent any demonstration.
All educational institutions remained closed while rail service has been suspended in the valley as a precautionary measure following strike called by separatists against the alleged ill treatment of Kashmiri detenues in jails within and outside the state.
Officials said that District Magistrate (DM), Srinagar has imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC on Saturday in the areas under the jurisdiction of police Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, M R Gunj and Rainawari in the downtown and SeK in Srinagar. “Partial restrictions have also been imposed in Maisuma in the civil lines and Kralkhud in the old city,” they said.
However, the situation on the ground was totally different as all main roads were closed with barbed wire and by parked bulletproof vehicles to prevent any traffic or pedestrian movement in SeK and downtown.
The entire Nallahmar road from Nawa Kadal to Khanyar has been closed and large number of security forces and state police personnel were deployed to strictly implement the restrictions. The otherwise very busy road presented a deserted look with only security forces, wearing bullet proof jackets, deployed after every ten feet.
The road has been closed with barbed wire at several places and people were directed to remain indoors. UNI
