Kolkata, Nov 29: President Ram Nath Kovind today visited Jorasanko Thakurbari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family, today early morning. This is the house where Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, and breathed his last on August 7, 1941.Mr Kovind was accompanied by Governor of West Bengal Keshari Nath Tripathy and Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury.
The President stayed there for about 15 minutes and went through different rooms and gave a close look to the objects used by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Mr Kovind after the visit remarked that it was a great experience for him. The President paid floral tributes to Gurudev in the rooms where he was born and where he passed away.He also visited ‘Bichitra’ and ‘China’ galleries and went through the photographs very minutely. It is to be noted that Jorasanko Thakurbari was transformed into a museum with a number of galleries, dedicated to the poet and his family-members.The museum also houses original paintings of Rabindranath Tagore acquired from Rathindranath Tagore, Tagore’s son, by the Government of West Bengal and several photographs that came as a permanent loan from the National Library.The museum has been an integral part of Rabindra Bharati University, established in 1962. UNI
