Srinagar, Nov 3: In view of massive opposition by religious, social and civil society organizations, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that opening of a liquor shops at Srinagar International Airport would not be allowed.
      The Airport Authority of India (AAI) had recently issued a tender for opening of duty paid liquor shop at the Airport.
       However, almost all religious, besides opposition parties, social and civil society organizations strongly protested against the opening of the liquor shops at Srinagar airport. They rejected the claim that opening of liquor shop would in any way help tourist arrival in the valley.
      Jammu and Kashmir Excise department on Friday issued an order that they would not allow opening of a liquor shop at Srinagar airport as it violates the provisions of J&K excise Act, 1958 and liquor License and Sales Rules, 1984.
      The order issued by Excise commissioner, said that in continuation to this office letter dated October 13, 2017 intimating that the J&K excise Department shall not grant Liquor license for opening of liquor shop or vend at Srinagar International airport in violation of to the provisions of J&K excise Act, 1958 and liquor License and Sales Rules, 1984.
        The letter further intimated that opening of liquor shop or vend at the airport  will not be allowed or permitted as such you (AAI) may stop the process of any such proposal, as the Excise Department will not grant license required for opening of liquor vend/shop at the international airport.
       Following refusal by Excise department to grant permission for opening of liquor shop, the AAI also cancelled the tender for duty paid liquor shop at the Airport.  
      The AAI further said that honouring the sentiments of local people, the AAI has decided to cancel the tender process of duty paid liquor shop with immediate effect.
  The statement of AAI further said that cancellation of the tender process,all controversies arising out will be now placed at rest. However, the AAI believes and works towards better facilities for its passengers and endeavors to cater for more and more passenger friendly good initiatives towards customer satisfaction, the statement said.
      All wine shops besides cinema halls and beauty parlours were closed in the Kashmir valley in early 90s following eruption of militancy. However, immediately after the National Conference (NC) government assumed office in the state in 1996, three cinema halls—Regal, Neelam and Broadway—were reopened after they were paid financial assistance by the government. Later, one each wine shop were also opened at Broadway in high security Batwara area, Dal Lake and Alochi Bagh. Regal cinema was the first to get closed after a grenade attack. Later Broadway and Neelam, near civil secretariat, too were closed.
  Wine shop at Alochi Bagh was also closed due to attack by militants while two liquor shops are still operating in Dal Lake and Broadway area.
      However, majority beauty parlous are now back to work in the valley. UNI
