New Delhi,
Nov 1: The Supreme Court on Wednesday, in an interim order, asked the
Centre to take steps for expeditious disposal of cases pending against
parliamentarians and MLAs.
A bench, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, and also comprising Justice Navin Sinha, asked the Union of India to apprise it as to how many cases were pending against the lawmakers.
The interim order came on a petition filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Upadhyay seeking a lifetime ban on convicted parliamentarians and MLAs.
The Centre, the apex court ruled, should apprise it as to how much would be spent to constitute special courts for speedy disposal of cases pending against the lawmakers.
These could be set up on the lines of fast track courts, the bench ruled.
December 13, 2017, was set for the next hearing.
Election Commission counsel, Meenakshi Arora, submitted that there should be a life term ban on parliamentarians and MLAs from contesting elections after being convicted in criminal cases. UNI
