Belagavi, Nov 13: Terming the murder of Journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh as a cruel act, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said his government was committed to arrest the perpetrators of crime and ensure punishment to them.
Speaking on the condolence motion moved by Legislative Assembly Speaker K B Koliwad on the opening day of the session here, he said the government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the purpose and expressed confidence that the culprits will be brought to book. However, Contrary to earlier claims of Home Minister RamalingaReddy, the Chief Minister said that the those behind the killing of Ms Lankesh were yet to be identified but SIT officials would soon apprehend them. Mr Reddy had in a Meet the Press at Bengaluru a couple of daysback said that the SIT had definite clues on the accused of Ms Lankesh’s murder and they would be apprehended soon. Ms Lankesh was shot dead from close range by an intruder on September 5 this year when the Editor of Gauri Lankesh Patrike weekly returned from office and about to enter her house in Bengaluru.  Meanwhile, Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy moved the condolence motion to condole the death of leaders including former Chief Minister Dharam Singh, former ISRO Chairman U R Rao and others. But the name of Gauri Lankesh was not mentioned leading to protests by the ruling party members. Food Minister U T Khader raised the issue and urged the Chairman to include the name of Ms Lankesh. The Chairman said some names could have been missed as many noted people in the society had died between the previous and current session. In the end he agreed to add the name of Ms Lankesh. UNI
