Delhi, Nov 6: As the crucial next meeting of Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Council is nearing, war of words has intensified on the country’s biggest
economic reform with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dubbing it as
"Great Selfish Tax". In a tweet, the AITC chief said, "Great Selfish Tax (GST) to harass the
people. To take away jobs. To hurt businesses. To finish the economy. GoI
totally failed to tackle". The GST Council, headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is scheduled to meet
on November 10 and may consider lowering tax rates on some goods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week had said GST Council would take further
corrective steps if State governments don’t create trouble. On November 8, Opposition parties have decided to observe the day as “Black
Day” in protest against demonetisation.
Ms Banerjee in a tweet has also urged all social media users to change their twitter DP to “black”. “#Noteban is a disaster. On #Nov8BlackDay to protest against this scam that destroyed the economy, let us also change our Twitter DP to black,” she said. UNI
