New Delhi, Nov 21: India's re-election to the prestigious International Court of Justice can be attributed to India's "rising" global position and is also a big step towards New Delhi's leap towards permanent membership in the UN Security Council, Justice Dalveer Bhandari has said.
"It was unprecedented that India was pitted against one of the P-5 (Permanent) members and it has never happened before. That made it slightly difficult. This victory shows that the world wants greater representations of all civilisations and legal systems at the ICJ," Justice Bhandari told the Republic TV on his re-election to the world court.
"It was a tough contest... India's rising position has made a difference, and the image that India has carved out for itself on the global stage has paid great dividends," Justice Bhandari said. Justice Bhandari, 70, won the last seat in the world court after Britain withdrew its candidate Christopher Greenwood in a keenly contested race between the two nations. After the two designated days and multiple rounds of voting that ended up in a deadlock, choice of the majority prevailed. Mr Bhandari received 183-193 votes in the General Assembly and secured all the 15 votes in the Security Council after separate and simultaneous elections were held at the UN headquarters in New York.
It will be the first time since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was established in 1945 that there will be no British judge. Answering questions over phone, Justice Bhandari said this victory could go a long way in helping India assume crucial berth as a permanent member in the United Nations Security Council. "India is the fastest growing economy in the world. India has acquired a high position and has now been
recognised by the entire world. This is a big step in that direction (permanent UNSC seat)," Justice Bhandari said. UNI
