New Delhi, Nov 3: The Delhi BJP on Friday demanded the resignation of Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on moral grounds, saying that the latter's writing a letter to the Delhi High Court equated to an attack on the relations of two pillars of democracy - the legislature and the judiciary.
In a statement here, Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari said that questions had been raised earlier on the role of Mr Goel, but the news of a Speaker writing a letter to the Delhi High Court, had shocked everyone. This was an attack on the relations of two pillars of democracy - the legislature and the judiciary, he added.
As per information through media reports, the contents of the letter were as objectionable as the language of the bills and resolutions brought in Delhi Assembly, said the Delhi BJP chief.
The application moved by the Speaker in the Delhi High Court seeking withdrawal of the letter within a couple of days, clearly shows that Mr Goel knew that writing this letter was unconstitutional and anarchic, Mr Tiwari pointed out.
For last almost three years, development work has been at a standstill in Delhi as the Kejriwal government was busy in power struggle with the Centre and the Lt Governor. On the other hand, the government has misused its
absolute majority in the Delhi Assembly for raking up controversies by bringing and approving unlawful bills, he said.
Mr Goel had written a letter on October 27 to Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court Gita Mittal, alleging that a division bench of the court had passed orders against the legislature without ascertaining facts. On Thursday, the Speaker said he wished to withdraw the letter, since he did not want it to be converted into a petition. UNI
