Guwahati,
Nov 10: Tax rates of over 170 items in the current 28 per cent slab under GST regime are likely to be brought down to the 18 per
cent slab, as the 23rd GST Council meet is being held here today.
Television reports, quoting sources privy to the discussions in the meeting, said deliberations were being held on cutting down the tax slab of a number of items in the 28 per cent slab.
At present, there were 225 items in the 28 per cent tax slab. The ongoing GST Council meet is expected to exempt about 175 items from this slab and bring these down to the 18 per cent slab.
The meeting is, however, unlikely to accept the Congress-ruled states demand for complete abolition of the 28 per cent slab. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who is chairing the meeting, is expected to make a formal announcement of the decision later this evening
at the end of the meeting. UNI
