Chennai, Nov 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here today on a brief visit to the city
during which he would attend two functions and also call on DMK President
and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to enquire about his
health condition.
Mr Modi was received at the airport by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Chief Secretary Ms Girija Vaidyanathan, DGP, City Police Commissioner, senior BJP leaders, including
State Unit Chief Ms Tamizhisai Soundararajan, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, Ms Vanathi Srinivasan, National Secretary H Raja, Rajya Sabha Member L Ganesan and leaders of friendly
parties.
Police have made tight security arrangements in view of his visit to the city.
A large number of BJP cadres have thronged the airport outside the VIP Gate No.5, following an invitation from the BJP state unit that Mr Modi would address them.
But, after a brief reception, Mr Modi left for INS Adyar by a helicopter from where he proceeded to the Madras University Centenary auditorium to participate in the platinum jubilee celebrations of leading Tamil daily 'Daily Thanthi' and later for the wedding of the daughter of a senior IAS
officer in the PMO office at a private marriage hall in R A Puram.
After meeting Mr Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, which both the BJP and the DMK said would be a courtesy call, Mr Modi would leave for New Delhi.
At INS Adyar, Mr Palaniswami and Mr Panneerselvam briefed Mr Modi about the recent rains and the damages caused to the standing crops in several lakh of acres in various districts of the state.
Reports said that they also submitted a report to the Prime Minister detailing the losses.
As part of security measures, over more than 10,000 police personnel were deployed on the Marina beach front where the Madras University campus was located and all along the route to be travelled by Mr Modi. UNI
