Lucknow, Feb 5 :  India is eyeing defence export of USD 5 billion in the next five years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday, highlighting the measures taken by his government to boost manufacturing and woo investors to set up a base in the country.

Inaugurating the 11th edition of DefExpo here, Modi said a country of the size of India cannot entirely depend on imports and added the number of defence licenses issued in the last five years has risen to 460 from 210 in 2014, the year he first came to power.

India is building several defence equipment like artillery guns, aircraft carriers, submarines, light-combat aircraft, and combat helicopters, he said.

"Our mantra is Make in India, for India, for world. In 2014 the export of defence equipment from India was about Rs 2,000 crore. In the last 2 years it has gone up to Rs 17,000 crore. In the next five years our target is export of USD 5 billion, which is about Rs 35,000 crore," the prime minister said.

India is not only a major market globally but a vast opportunity for the world as well, he said, asserting that Uttar Pradesh is going to be one of the biggest defence manufacturing hubs in India.

Lack of proper policy initiative in last several decades made India the biggest importer of defence platforms, he added.

New Delhi, Feb 3 :  The anti-CAA protests in Seelampur, Jamia Nagar and Shaheen Bagh are not a coincidence but a political design aimed at harming the harmony of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday while accusing the AAP and the Congress of fuelling the demonstrations.

Addressing a rally in Karkardooma in east Delhi, Modi alleged that the AAP and the Congress were provoking people and misinforming them.

They were keeping the Constitution and tricolour in the forefront, but the aim was to "divert attention from the real conspiracy", Modi said ahead of the Delhi elections on February 8.

Referring to the protest in Shaheen Bagh, he said people commuting to and from from Noida are facing a lot of problems.

"The people of Delhi are quiet and they are angry watching this vote bank politics," he said.

"If the strength of those plotting a conspiracy increases, then another road or lane will be blocked. We can't leave Delhi to such anarchy. Only people of Delhi can stop this. Every vote given to the BJP can do this," he said.

"Be it Seelampur, Jamia (Nagar) or Shaheen Bagh, for the last several days, there have been protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Are these protests coincidental. No, this is not coincidental, it is an experiment," he said.

Behind the protests, Modi added, is a political design aimed at harming national harmony.

The Shaheen Bagh protests have taken centrestage in the BJP poll campaign with the top party leadership raking it up in every rally.

Modi also took a swipe at the Congress saying those who questioned the Batla House encounter are now saving those who raised 'tukde tukde' slogans.

He also slammed the AAP and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and said they questioned the Army on surgical strikes.

The prime minister promised that the BJP-led Central government will provide 'pucca' houses to all poor families by 2022.

The Kejriwal-led party will continue to stall welfare schemes for people if it is voted back to power, he said.

Modi said his government was finding solutions to decades-old problems affecting the country and cited the regularisation of unauthorised colonies to assert that the BJP had fulfilled its promise to the people of Delhi.

"We delivered on our promise to people of Delhi that we will regularise unauthorised colonies," Modi said.

The BJP, he added, believes in positivity and the interest of the country is supreme for the party.

He told the gathering that India will not be driven by politics of hate but by the policy of development.

Listing his government's achievements, he cited the revocation of Article 370, the Ayodhya verdict, the Kartarpur corridor and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act for persecuted minorities.

He also said provision of faceless appeal, new and simple structure of direct tax, move towards unified procurement system, stress on disinvestment are some of the steps which will reduce the government out of people's lives and will enhance their "ease of living".

The budget, Modi noted, will meet the current needs of the country as well as the future expectations in the decade.

"The new reforms announced in the budget will work to accelerate the economy, financially empower every citizen of the country and strengthen the foundation of the economy in this decade," Modi said in his comments.

Noting that the main areas of employment are agriculture, infrastructure, textiles and technology, he said the four have been given great emphasis in the budget to increase employment generation.

Referring to the government's efforts to double the income of farmer, he said 16 action points have been created which will serve to increase employment in rural areas.

Integrated approach has been adopted for the agriculture sector in the budget, which along with traditional methods will increase value addition in horticulture, fisheries, animal husbandry and also increase employment, he said.

"Under the Blue Economy, the youth will also get new opportunities in the field of fish processing and marketing," Modi noted.

According to the World Bank, the blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystem.

Referring to the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Modi said it has given a new expansion to the health sector of the country.

"In this sector, there has been a lot of scope for human resources - doctors, nurses, attendants as well as medical device manufacturing. New decisions have been taken by the government to increase it," he said.

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), is a scheme that aims to help economically vulnerable Indians who are in need of healthcare facilities.

Prime Minister Modi had rolled out the scheme in September 2018.

He said in the budget, the government has made several special efforts to promote employment generation in the field of technology.

A number of policy initiatives have been taken for areas such as new smart cities, electronic manufacturing, data centre parks, biotechnology and quantum technology.

He hoped that India will move strongly towards becoming an integral part of the global value chain.

He pointed out that new and innovative initiatives have been announced regarding skill development of youth.

"For example, apprenticeships in degree courses, internships in local bodies and provision of online degree courses. Bridge courses are also being arranged for young people from India who want to go abroad for jobs," he said.

Modern infrastructure is of great importance for modern India, he said, adding that the infrastructure sector is also a large employment generator.

"Construction of 6,500 projects from Rs 100 lakh crore will increase employment opportunities in a big way. The National Logistics Policy will also benefit trade, business and employment. In the field of infrastructure, we will give new power to youth energy through start-ups and through project development," he said.

Describing investment is the biggest driver for employment, he said some historical steps have been taken in this direction.

Arrangements are being made to strengthen the bond market and for long-term financing of the infrastructure, he said.

Due to the removal of the dividend distribution tax, Rs 25,000 crore will come in the hands of companies which will help them in further investments.

Various tax concessions have been given to attract outside investment into India. Tax benefits have also been provided for start ups and real estate. All these decisions will accelerate the economy and through this will provide new employment opportunities to the youth.

He said the rights of taxpayers will be explained in the taxpayer charters.

"Our government has always relied on small entrepreneurs associated with MSMEs. Audit on turnover up to Rs 5 crore will no longer be required," he said.

Steps like establishing a common online exam for government jobs, Kisan Rail and Krishi Udaan are going to have long-term benefits for a cross section of citizens.

He said to get government jobs, youth have to take many different exams and travel to places.

"Changing this arrangement, appointments will now be made through the online Common Examination taken by the National Recruitment Agency," he said.

New Delhi  :   Jammu and Kashmir will not remain a Union Territory for long, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured in his address to the nation this evening on the government's move to end special powers to the state and splitting it into two union territories. PM Modi also assured that the situation in the state would return to normal soon.

"This was a step taken after a lot of thought... I don't think there will be a need to keep Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory for long, though Union Territory status will be retained for Ladakh," PM Modi said in a 38-minute speech. The reason, he indicated, was that Central rule over the last year has been beneficial to the state and led to good governance.

"We want elections to be held. People will soon get a chance to choose their elected representatives. They will choose their MLAs, their ministers and their Chief Minister," he added.

"Some people are opposed to the government move, I respect their opposition, it is essential in a democracy. The Centre is responding to them and is working to improve things. I urge them to act in the nation's interest and help the government and the nation in creating a new environment in the region," he said.

Earlier in parliament, Union Minister Amit Shah had also said that Jammu and Kashmir will only be a Union Territory "for the time being". PM Modi said Central rule has been beneficial and led to good governance in Jammu and Kashmir.

The government's decision can only bring about positive changes in the lives of the common man, the Prime Minister said. It would mean protection of Indian laws, industrialisation, a boost in tourism and employment. Politically, not much will change, he assured.

Article 370, from which Jammu and Kashmir drew its special status, also gave the people "nepotism, terrorism and separatism and nothing else, he said, pointing out that over the last three decades, more than "42,000 innocents have been killed" in the state.

Calling the government's decision "historic", he said it is the beginning of a "new era" when all citizens have equal rights and responsibilities.

Indian laws -- which protect the rights of a billion people -- will now be available to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which had its own penal code - the Ranbir Penal Code - as part of its special status.

"1.5 crore people never benefitted from the country's laws," he said. "The right to education never reached Jammu and Kashmir's children, sanitation workers never got benefits, strong laws to prevent atrocities on Dalits weren't applicable, laws protecting the rights of minorities were skipped, labour laws never reached its people," he said.

Since Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir has been paralysed by an unprecedented lockdown to prevent any backlash over the government's big move.

More than 50000 security personnel have been pushed into Jammu and Kashmir in addition to the existing troops. There has been a complete communications blackout - as part of which phone services and internet connections have been snapped.

Prohibitory orders are in place as part of which large gatherings and meetings are banned and the state's mainstream political leaders, including former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have been under arrest                                                         [Agencies]

New Delhi, Aug 8  :   As Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday strongly defended his government's decision to revoke provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution for Jammu and Kashmir, a section of state residents alleged the way it was done was "extremely undemocratic".

Some even claimed that the Centre just wanted to win lands and "not hearts of Kashmiris".

From students to professionals, belonging to both Jammu and Kashmir regions, many were apprehensive that taking away of the special status, will render the "ecologically sensitive" province "vulnerable" to be exploited for infrastructure-related activities.

"Now, with revoking of the Article, flood gates will be opened for the corporate sector to invest in big projects. It will harm our pristine environment," a Kashmiri journalist, who did not wish to be identified, alleged.

Ajaz Ahmed, a physiotherapist who is in his 30s, said, "They only want the land of Kashmir and they do not want to win the hearts of Kashmiris.

"If they wanted to win our trust, they should have taken us into confidence, discussed about the pros and cons of the exercise and made us feel secure. Our families are living under siege there. If an emergency arises, our families won't even have access to an ambulance.           [Agencies]
