Shimla, Nov 2: In terms of election campaign, the battle is really warming up in the tiny state of Himachal Pradesh with local citizens taking keen interest. There is no escape from political reality as well because every five years – the electorate has thrown out the incumbent regime.
Yet, nothing could be said in certainty, caution many voters and political observers even as the Congress campaign this time has been somewhat lacklustre so far. And BJP’s has been real do-or-die battle.
Amidst the confidence of making it to power again riding the anti-incumbency wave, a large number of BJP supporters and foot-soldiers fear the “rebel factor”.
In many key constituencies across the state, denied tickets – key BJP leaders and disgruntled elements have put their hat in the ring. Dissidents have surfaced in Congress camp as well.
Moreover, in many areas – the battle is gradually getting more guided by caste considerations even as in the hilly state --- caste has generally remained a dormant factor.
As one talks to voters, one thing is clear: development and parochial interests often dominate Indian politics and Himachal is no exception, perhaps.
In prestigious Palampur seat, former BJP legislator Praveen Sharma has put himself in the fray – unhappy that he was declined ticket as the high command favoured women activist-politician Indu Goswami. She is said to enjoy good rapport with many central leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The rebel Sharma is believed to be close to veteran BJP leader Shanta Kumar, a two-time Himachal Pradesh chief minister, and also a native strongman in Palamur.
Ms Goswami has said the ticket was given to her as she lobbied hard for higher representation for women.
What would be the final outcome and who can rule the roost in Palampur election – between Mr Sharma and
Ms Goswami – is being debated even in roadside tea stalls.
Sharan Kumar, 56-year-old shopkeeper says, “The BJP has clear edge. But elections can be unpredictable many a times. Rebellion factor is a serious challenge for them. BJP would also face keen contest in Sri Renukaji assembly segment".
In this segment, the battle this time is locked between rebel BJP leader Hirdaya Ram, who had created a record when he wrested the seat from Congress in a by-election in 2011. UNI
