BJP's Kapil Mishra

New Delhi, Jan 25 :  The Election Commission on Saturday imposed a 48-hour campaigning ban on BJP candidate from Delhi's Model Town constituency Kapil Mishra following his controversial tweets, poll panel officials said.

The ban order, signed by the Chef Election Commissioner and two fellow Election Commissioners, would come into force from 5 PM on Saturday, they said.

While Twitter had taken down one of his controversial tweets on Friday following directions of the EC, an FIR was lodged against him under section 125 of the Representation of the People Act dealing with creating enmity among classes.

Centre agrees in SC to revisit its 2017 proposal of taking over Unitech management

New Delhi, Jan 18 :  In a major development, the Centre has told the Supreme Court that it is agreeable to revisit its 2017 proposal to take over the management control of embattled realty firm Unitech Ltd and complete its stalled projects to bring relief to around 12,000 hassled home buyers.

The Centre, in its six-page note submitted to a bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud, said it is prepared to revisit its proposal of December 2017, to remove the existing management of Unitech Ltd and appoint ten nominee directors of the government.

The Centre, however, said it would not infuse any funds for completion of pending projects of the company. It said the court, while ensuring a period of calm should direct a moratorium for 12 months.

For the proposed board, the government also suggested the name of retired Haryana cadre IAS officer Yudvir Singh Malik, as chairman and managing director of the board and names of members including A K Mittal, ex-CMD of National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), Renu Sud Karnad, Chairman of HDFC Credila Finance Service Pvt Ltd, Jitu Virwani, CMD of Embassy Group, Niranjan Hiranandani , MD of Mumbai-based Hiranandani Group.

It said the court may appoint a retired judge of the Supreme Court for supervising the resolution framework finalised by the proposed board of directors.

"That this court may allow the proposed board of directors to appoint key managerial persons, professionals (legal, insolvency, financial advisors, real estate professionals, etc) for assisting the government appointed board and payment of requisite professional fees including the legal fees, thereof from the company accounts," the Centre's note said.

It also sought directions to the promoters, the present management of the company, forensic auditors, asset reconstruction companies, banks and financial institutions and state governments to extend cooperation to the proposed board of directors.

"That this court may issue directions to restrain the promoters from alienating, mortgaging, creating charge or lien or interest in the movable and immovable properties owned by them," the government said, adding, services of the committee headed by Justice S N Dhingra, appointed to sell the company's assets, be put on rest.

The government also sought immunity for the proposed directors in respect of the numerous litigations pending across the country, involving the company, management and its promoters.

It also sought permission for the proposed board of directors to raise funds due from the home buyers, sell the unsold inventory, monetising the unencumbered assets for completion of the stalled projects.

"That this court recognizes and directs that without any prejudice to any order, the government has the right to refer the company to liquidation or Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), like resolution outside the framework of IBC, in case the assigned takeover is not viable in the absence of requisite resources, the government said.

On December 18, last year, the top court had asked the Centre if it was agreeable to revisit its 2017 proposal as there is urgent need for the projects of Unitech Ltd. to be taken up by a specialised agency, so as to ensure completion in a time bound schedule in the interest of the home buyers.

The top court had said, "Since the Union of India withdrew the application which it had submitted before the NCLT only for the reason that this Court was seized of the present proceedings, we are of the view that the Union of India should revisit the original proposal in the interests of home buyers and consider appointing independent Directors for the takeover of the management of Unitech Limited".

It had said that these deliberations may be conducted at the highest level and Attorney General K K Venugopal should apprise the court by January 15, about the modalities which have been worked out.

In 2017, the Centre had moved the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) seeking suspension of the current directors and an order of restraint on the alienation of assets by Unitech Ltd.

The NCLT in its order December 8, 2017, issued interim directions for suspension of directors of Unitech Ltd and restrained them from alienating, mortgaging, creating charge or lien or interest in the properties owned by them personally or that of the company till the conclusion of investigation.

However, the top court on December 13, 2017, stayed the NCLT's December 8, 2017 order and later the Centre agreed to withdraw its application from the tribunal.

In 2018, the apex court had directed a forensic audit of Unitech Ltd and its sister concerns and subsidiaries by Samir Paranjpe, Partner, Forensic and Investigation Services in M/s Grant Thornton India.

The forensic auditors have also submitted their report which said that Unitech Ltd received around Rs 14,270 crores from 29,800 home buyers mostly between 2006-2014 and around Rs 1,805 crores from six financial institutions for the construction of 74 projects.

The audit revealed that around Rs 5,063 crore of home buyers money and around Rs 763 crores of fund received from financial institutions were not utilized by the company and high value investments were made off-shore tax-haven countries between 2007-2010.

The top court ordered investigation into the omission and commission of promoters of Unitech Ltd under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Unitech promoters Sanjay Chandra and his brother Ajay Chandra are currently lodged in Tihar jail for allegedly siphoning off homebuyers' money.
PM Modi condoles death of Ashwini Chopra

New Delhi, Jan 18 :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday condoled the death of journalist and former parliamentarian Ashwini Chopra, saying he will be remembered for his contribution to the media world.

Chopra, 63, a former MP and resident editor of Hindi daily Punjab Kesari, died on Saturday.

"Anguished by the passing away of Shri Ashwini Kumar Chopra ji. He will be remembered for his contribution to the media world. He worked diligently as a public representative and undertook many community welfare initiatives. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Om Shanti," the prime minister wrote on Twitter.

New Delhi, Aug 24  :  BJP stalwart and former finance minister Arun Jaitley died on Saturday at AIIMS . He was 66.

In a brief statement, the hospital said Jaitley died at 12.07 pm.

It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Arun Jaitley, former Finance Minister of Government of India, at 12.07 pm on August 24, the AIIMS said.

Jaitley was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on August 9 and was treated by a multi-disciplinary team of senior doctors.

Hospital sources had earlier said he was on life support.

Jaitley, a lawyer by profession, had been a key member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet in the BJP government's first term. He held the finance and defence portfolios, and often acted as the chief troubleshooter of the government.

Jaitley did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election, because of his ill-health.

In May this year, Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS for treatment.

He had undergone a renal transplant on May 14 last year at AIIMS with Railways Minister Piyush Goyal filling in for him in the finance ministry at that time.

Jaitley, who had stopped attending office since early April last year, was back in the finance ministry on August 23, 2018.

In September 2014, he underwent bariatric surgery to correct the weight he had gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition.

New Delhi  :   Jammu and Kashmir will not remain a Union Territory for long, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured in his address to the nation this evening on the government's move to end special powers to the state and splitting it into two union territories. PM Modi also assured that the situation in the state would return to normal soon.

"This was a step taken after a lot of thought... I don't think there will be a need to keep Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory for long, though Union Territory status will be retained for Ladakh," PM Modi said in a 38-minute speech. The reason, he indicated, was that Central rule over the last year has been beneficial to the state and led to good governance.

"We want elections to be held. People will soon get a chance to choose their elected representatives. They will choose their MLAs, their ministers and their Chief Minister," he added.

"Some people are opposed to the government move, I respect their opposition, it is essential in a democracy. The Centre is responding to them and is working to improve things. I urge them to act in the nation's interest and help the government and the nation in creating a new environment in the region," he said.

Earlier in parliament, Union Minister Amit Shah had also said that Jammu and Kashmir will only be a Union Territory "for the time being". PM Modi said Central rule has been beneficial and led to good governance in Jammu and Kashmir.

The government's decision can only bring about positive changes in the lives of the common man, the Prime Minister said. It would mean protection of Indian laws, industrialisation, a boost in tourism and employment. Politically, not much will change, he assured.

Article 370, from which Jammu and Kashmir drew its special status, also gave the people "nepotism, terrorism and separatism and nothing else, he said, pointing out that over the last three decades, more than "42,000 innocents have been killed" in the state.

Calling the government's decision "historic", he said it is the beginning of a "new era" when all citizens have equal rights and responsibilities.

Indian laws -- which protect the rights of a billion people -- will now be available to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which had its own penal code - the Ranbir Penal Code - as part of its special status.

"1.5 crore people never benefitted from the country's laws," he said. "The right to education never reached Jammu and Kashmir's children, sanitation workers never got benefits, strong laws to prevent atrocities on Dalits weren't applicable, laws protecting the rights of minorities were skipped, labour laws never reached its people," he said.

Since Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir has been paralysed by an unprecedented lockdown to prevent any backlash over the government's big move.

More than 50000 security personnel have been pushed into Jammu and Kashmir in addition to the existing troops. There has been a complete communications blackout - as part of which phone services and internet connections have been snapped.

Prohibitory orders are in place as part of which large gatherings and meetings are banned and the state's mainstream political leaders, including former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have been under arrest                                                         [Agencies]

New Delhi, Aug 8  :   As Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday strongly defended his government's decision to revoke provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution for Jammu and Kashmir, a section of state residents alleged the way it was done was "extremely undemocratic".

Some even claimed that the Centre just wanted to win lands and "not hearts of Kashmiris".

From students to professionals, belonging to both Jammu and Kashmir regions, many were apprehensive that taking away of the special status, will render the "ecologically sensitive" province "vulnerable" to be exploited for infrastructure-related activities.

"Now, with revoking of the Article, flood gates will be opened for the corporate sector to invest in big projects. It will harm our pristine environment," a Kashmiri journalist, who did not wish to be identified, alleged.

Ajaz Ahmed, a physiotherapist who is in his 30s, said, "They only want the land of Kashmir and they do not want to win the hearts of Kashmiris.

"If they wanted to win our trust, they should have taken us into confidence, discussed about the pros and cons of the exercise and made us feel secure. Our families are living under siege there. If an emergency arises, our families won't even have access to an ambulance.           [Agencies]

Former Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has passed away on August 6.

Sushma Swaraj had suffered a massive cardiac arrest, and was rushed to AIIMS Hospital, New Delhi as her condition was critical. Attempts to revive her had failed.

The 67-year-old had not been keeping well lately, which is why she had not contested the recently held Lok Sabha election and opted out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new government.
Earlier this evening, Ms Swaraj had tweeted congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill in parliament.
"Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," her tweet read.
She has been the chief minister of Delhi, and held the portfolios of information and broadcasting, and health in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

New Delhi, Aug 5  :   Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday moved a resolution in the Lok Sabha for bringing a bill to reorganise the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Moving the resolution following the President's order abrogating Article 370, Shah sought the permission of the House to bring the bill.

He assured the opposition members that he would move the bill and the resolution for consideration of the House on Tuesday and was only seeking the permission of the House for the same now.

"I will move the bill for consideration and passage tomorrow. The opposition can have detailed discussion on the same. I am ready to give the reply," he told the House, amid protests by opposition members and thumping of desks by treasury benches.                                [Agencies]

New Delhi, Aug 5   :
Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday moved a resolution in Rajya Sabha that Article 370 of the Constitution, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, will not be applicable in the state.

Making a statement, Shah said this will come into effect when the President gives assent and the central government notifies it.

The Upper House witnessed massive uproar soon after the announcement by the Home Minister.

New Delhi, Aug 5   :  The government on Monday revoked Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and proposed that the state be bifurcated into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, provoking outrage from the NC and PDP and triumph from leaders of India's ruling BJP.

Meeting a long-held promise of the BJP, Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha that Article 370, which allowed Jammu and Kashmir to have its own Constitution, will no longer be applicable.

"The president on the recommendation of Parliament is pleased to declare as from 5th of August 2019, all clauses of the said Article 370 shall cease to be operative... ," stated the resolution moved by the Home minister.

Shah also moved a bill proposing bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir division and Ladakh.

Shah, who introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill, said the union territory in Ladakh will have no legislature like Chandigarh. The other union territory of Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature like Delhi and Puducherry.

The announcement, capping days of uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir, led to an uproar, in the House and outside it too.

India had failed Kashmir in keeping its promises, PDP chief and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufi said.

She said the government's unilateral decision "to scrap Article 370" is illegal and unconstitutional.

It will make India an occupational force in Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba said on Twitter.

"It will have catastrophic consequences for the subcontinent. GOIs intentions are clear. They want the territory of J&K by terrorising its people. India has failed Kashmir in keeping its promises," Mehbooba, who is under house arrest in Srinagar, said on Twitter.

"Not sure how long I'll be able to communicate. Is this the India we acceded to?" she asked.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah echoed her outrage, also labelling the government's move "unilateral".

"Government of India (GOI)'s unilateral and shocking decisions today are a total betrayal of the trust that the people of Jammu & Kashmir had reposed in India when the state acceded to it in 1947. The decisions will have far-reaching and dangerous consequences. This is an aggression against people of the State as had been warned by an all-parties meeting in Srinagar yesterday," he said.

The government, he said in a statement, had resorted to "deceit and stealth" to lay the ground for these disastrous decisions.

"Those of us who gave democratic voice to the people of Jammu & Kashmir, are incarcerated as lakhs of armed security personnel have been put on the ground... A long and tough battle lies ahead. We are ready for that," he said.

The mood was triumphant in the BJP quarters.

The government's move on Article 370, said senior party leader Arun Jaitley, is a monumental decision towards national integration.

His party colleague Ram Madhav also hailed the decision.

"What a glorious day. Finally the martyrdom of thousands starting with Dr Shyam Prasad Mukherjee for complete integration of J&K into Indian Union is being honoured and the seven decade old demand of the entire nation being realised in front of our eyes; in our lifetime. Ever imagined?" he tweeted moments after Shah's announcement.

Party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said the move had opened the path of growth and development for Jammu and Kashmir.                                                      [Agencies]

New Delhi, Aug 3 :   Underlining that the BJP's ideology and thoughts brought it to its current position and not the legacy of any family, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked party lawmakers on Saturday to remain connected with party workers and not forget their contribution in making them MPs and ministers.

Addressing more than 380 party MPs of both Houses of Parliament during a two-day training programme, the prime minister likened the party and its workers to a mother who nurtures a son, but feels a bit neglected when he gets married and pays more attention to his wife.

So once they become MPs, they should not forget the party and the workers. They should remain connected with the workers who have toiled for them, and not just in election time, Modi was quoted as saying by lawmakers who attended the session.

Modi credited BJP workers and their hardwork for the party's ascendancy.

"Therefore, we all should keep the spirit of a party worker alive in ourself," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi quoted Modi as saying.

"Modi described BJP as a family and categorically told party MPs that it is growing because of its ideology and thoughts and not because of the legacy of a family," Joshi said.

"The team BJP is an organic entity and not an assembled entity," Modi told the meeting.

Joshi said that Modi highlighted the importance of the organisational strength while talking about the party's impressive victory in Tripura's local elections.

The prime minister inaugurated the training programme, 'Abhyas Varga', at Parliament House complex and recalled his experience of attending a similar event in Surajkund. Modi said it was of great help to him, Joshi added.

The prime minister also stressed on the importance of learning and said it should continue whatever the age of an individual is.

"Modi said whatever our age is, we should remain students and keep learning. Learning is a continuous process and it is essential," Joshi said.

Modi, who will hold a session with the party MPs on Sunday, spoke briefly at the inaugural session.

Besides Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and working president J P Nadda addressed the inaugural session.

Later, Nadda also addressed a session on the idea of India. During the session, sources said, Modi and other senior leaders got off the dais, sat with the MPs in middle rows and listened to him.

Party's general secretary Bhupendra Yadav addressed a session on parliamentary procedures, while BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya discussed the use of information technology with MPs.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal is scheduled to address the parliamentarians on Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).

At the end of every address, there was a question-answer session.

On Sunday, the second and last day of the training programme, Modi and Shah are scheduled to address the MPs.

The programme is aimed at informing MPs about the party, its ideology and parliamentary procedures.

New Delhi, Jun 29 :  Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari Saturday suggested taking a leaf out of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh government's 'anti-Romeo' squads to check eve-teasing in the national capital.

"Eve-teasing incidents in buses, Metro and other places in Delhi is a matter of great concern. I demand the Delhi Police to form special squads as has been done in Uttar Pradesh so that no one troubles and teases our sisters and daughters," he said.

Tiwari urged the Delhi Police to deploy plain-clothes officers in such special squads to check eve-teasing incidents.

The ruling AAP, however, said the BJP was suggesting such an idea to hide the "failure" of the city police force.

"We saw what anti-Romeo squads did in Uttar Pradesh where they caught brothers and sisters going together. We will not let it happen in Delhi," AAP leader Sanjay Singh said.

The 'anti-Romeo squads' were formed soon after Yogi Adityanath assumed office of chief minister in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

New Delhi, Jun 28   :   Home Minister Amit Shah Friday accused the Congress of terrorism in Kashmir and responsible for the state's current situation, alleging that former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's decisions were behind India losing one-third of its territory to Pakistan.

He was replying to a debate in the Lok Sabha on the resolution to extend President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir for another six months from July 3.

Shah alleged that the policies of previous Congress governments widened the wedge between the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the country.

He said his government is making efforts to bridge this gap and remove terrorism from its roots and restore democracy in the state.

The House passed by voice vote the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019, to replace an ordinance issued by previous government, extending President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir, amidst opposition from the Congress and some other parties.

The Lok Sabha also cleared the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019, to replace an ordinance issued by the previous government.

He told the House that elections in the state will be held in a free, fair and democratic manner once the Election Commission announces the schedule.

Responding to a question, the Minister said assembly elections could not be held along with Lok Sabha elections in the state as large number of security personnel were required for the purpose.

Shah said Article 370 of the Constitution which extends special status to Jammu and Kashmir, is "temporary in nature" and "not permanent".

In his maiden speech as Home Minister in the lower house, Shah launched a blistering attack on the Congress alleging that it made the maximum use of Article 356 of the Constitution to dismiss elected governments in various states in the past.

"Today one-third of Kashmir is not with us. Who announced ceasefire when Pakistan encroached in Kashmir after independence and occupied one-third of its territory.

"Jawaharlal Nehru announced ceasefire and Pakistan took away that part of Kashmir," he said alleging that Nehru did not take the then Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel into confidence.

"If he would have taken Patel into confidence before announcing ceasefire, then Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) would not have formed and terrorism would not have existed in Kashmir," Shah said.

He said one-third of Indian territory is with Pakistan now.

The Congress members reacted sharply to this on which Shah said he would not take Nehru's name but referred to him only as the first prime minister.

The Home Minister said the present government adopted "zero tolerance" towards terrorism and people who try to divide the country have fear in their hearts, which will increase in the coming times.

"We are not members of the 'tukde tukde' gang. Those who want to break India should have fear in their hearts...they should be scared and their fear will increase further in the coming times," Shah asserted.

Continuing his tirade against the opposition party, he said so far Article 356 (President's Rule) was imposed 132 times all over the country, of which the Congress used it 93 times to dismiss state governments.

"Some in the opposition said that through President Rule efforts are being made to throttle democracy. 132 times Article 356 has been imposed in the country, of which 93 times was by Congress. We have never used Article 356 for political gains," he said.

The Home Minister also said the government withdrew security of 919 people in the state as there was no security threat for them.

"Earlier people who used to speak against the country were given security cover," he said, adding whereas those who spoke for India were actually killed in the state.

Invoking Vajpayee's philosphy of 'Insaaniyat, Jamhuriyat and Kashmiriat', Shah, who is also the BJP chief, said during the Congress' rule at the Centre, the rights of common man was snatched.

"They could not even go for voting (in the state) as their democratic right. It is for the first time that rights were being given to common people and 3 families are taking a backseat," he said while also referring to the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah by the then Congress government.

Shah said this sowed "seed of distrust among people of Jammu and Kashmir that was planted by Congress".

Suggesting that only a strong "medicine" could stop terrorism, Shah said the government at the same time does not want to create an atmosphere of fear.

"We are taking steps to remove the fear which you (Congress) have put in the minds of people," he said, while mentioning various developmental initiatives carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in the last five years.                   [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 24  :   The BJP on Monday demonstrated outside the offices of superintendents of police in various parts of West Bengal to protest against the "worsening law and order situation" of the state.

"The TMC government is trying to turn Bengal into a police state. The police have become trigger happy. They are opening fire at the drop of a hat and killing BJP workers. For chanting Jai Shri Ram, BJP workers are being killed," senior BJP leader Saynatan Basu alleged.

Scuffle broke out between BJP activists and police personnel in various districts when the party workers broke cordon and marched towards the SP's offices.

Hundreds of BJP activists in various parts of the state were detained, police said.

Since the saffron party won 18 of the 42 seats in the state, post-poll clashes in several areas and a number of people were killed.

Buoyed by major gains in Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, the BJP leadership is aiming at more than two-third majority in the assembly elections due in 2021 and also for early polls in the state.

The party's vote share zoomed to 40.25 per cent in the Lok Sabha polls of 2019 from 17 per cent in 2014.                                           [Agencies]

Lucknow, Jun 23  :  No party can dislodge the BJP from the Centre or Uttar Pradesh for next 50 years, claimed Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya Sunday.

Exactly a month after the BJP's impressive win in the Lok Sabha polls, Maurya also predicted that there was no future for the SP, BSP or the Congress in the state.

"I can say with full confidence that for the coming 50 years, I cannot see any future for the SP, BSP and the Congress in UP. In the coming 50 years, nobody will be able to dislodge BJP governments both at the Centre and in the state," said the deputy chief minister Maurya.

Maurya's claim was similar to what Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said in September 2018 as the BJP president while addressing the party leaders in the national executive meeting in New Delhi.

Amit Shah had said, "If the BJP wins the 2019 Lok Sabha election, no one can throw us out in the next 50 years."

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav too had made a similar claim earlier this month.

Maurya boasted about the BJP's future prospects while addressing a meeting of the party's backward class unit.

Urging the party workers to pull up their socks for the upcoming UP assembly bye-elections, Maurya said, "The amount of responsibility which was on you in 2014, 2017 and 2019, the same amount of responsibility is cast on you for the upcoming UP assembly bypolls."

Addressing the party's function, the deputy chief minister also accused the SP, BSP and Congress of never respecting people belonging to other backward classes and only exploiting them.

Taking a dig at SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Maurya said, "Akhilesh Yadav has now been reduced to being a leader of only a section of the Yadavs' community. He is no longer a leader of the backward class."

Mocking at the post-poll collapse of the SP-BSP alliance, Maurya said, "It seems the SP and BSP are no longer on talking terms (SP BSP mein kutti ho gayee hai)."

"While one is angry with the nephew, the other is angry with the aunt. When both of them were unable to stop the BJP despite being together, how can they stop the BJP now after parting ways? Such parties should be given farewell."

Maurya also said there had been some lapses on the part of the party, otherwise both the SP and BSP would have been wiped out in the Lok Sabha polls.

"By helping the lotus bloom in Amethi, the party workers have categorically stated that the Congress story in UP has ended," he said.

"Similar messages have emanated from Kannauj, Badaun and Firozabad where the members of the Saifai family have lost. Akhilesh Yadav will now be known as the last ruler of the Saifai family," claimed Maurya.

Maurya also exhorted the party workers to gear up for the party's enrollment drive.

"No one is untouchable for us. For Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and Rahul Gandhi there could be some untouchables, but not for the BJP. We believe in 'sabka saath, sabka vikaas, sabka vishwaas," he said.

The deputy chief minister also exhorted party workers to strive for the BJP winning at least 300 seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2022 assembly elections.

Paying tributes to Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Maurya said, "The day Article 370 is abrogated, it will be a true tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee."

Nagpur, Jun 23 :   A fire broke out Sunday evening in the BJP office at Ganeshpeth area in Nagpur when a function was underway, a party functionary said, adding that all present managed to move out safely.

BJP spokesperson Chandan Goswami said a switch board on the fifth floor of Mangalam Tower, where the function was being held, caught fire at around 5:30pm, possibly due to a short-circuit, and the blaze cut power supply, plunging the hall into darkness.

"(Nagpur West) MLA Sudhakar Deshmukh was addressing the gathering when the fire started. MLAs, officer-bearers, workers and journalists assembled at the hall managed to move out safely. Fire extinguishers in the hall were used to doused the blaze," he said.

The programme, to mark the appointment of former Nagpur mayor Pravin Datke as city BJP chief, was completed in a hall on the ground floor later, Goswami said.         [Agencies]

Jammu, Jun 19 :  The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP Wednesday demanded that the term of the state assembly should be reduced from six to five years, saying the state must have laws similar to those enacted by Parliament for the entire country.

"Like other states, J&K is also an integral part of India. Hence, it should have laws similar to those enacted by the Parliament for the entire country," BJP spokesperson Balbir Ram Rattan said.

Lashing out at the National Conference (NC), Rattan said people should understand the "dubious role" of the party on the issue.

The BJP spokesperson said the NC should explain the advantages of keeping the six-year term.

Rattan said the 42nd Amendment of the Constitution under which the term of Parliament and state assemblies was increased to six years by the then Indira Gandhi government at the Centre was immediately adopted by the then NC government led by Sheikh Abdullah in the state.

The same Amendment, when reversed by the Morarji Desai government in 1977, was not adopted by the Jammu and Kashmir government as it did not suit interests of the Valley leaders, Rattan claimed.

He added that since then, the tenure of state assemblies across the country was five years except J&K.

The BJP leader said their party had always stood for reducing the term of the state assembly to five years and called upon the intellectuals, think tanks and opinion-makers to educate people of the state about "self-interests of family-run political parties" of Kashmir.

"They have always misled people for their vote-bank politics and enjoyed the power for decades, least bothering about interests of the nation in this border state," Rattan said.

He said it was an irony that any law that suited "personal interests of Kashmir-centric political parties" was adopted but follow up amendments were rejected.                           [Agencies]

Bengaluru ,Jun 18 : The BJP's Karnataka unit Tuesday demanded that the State government convene an assembly session immediately to discuss the sale of land to JSW steel.

Senior BJP leader andformer deputy chief minister R Ashoka said the party will intensify its protest on the issue.

The BJP will not accept the cabinet sub-committee report on it, he said.

"On Jindal issue our fight will continue, it will not stop here...we will not leave the issue until it reaches logical end. We are discussing on taking the protest on this issue to district and taluk level," Ashoka said.

He claimed that coalition leaders like Congress H K Patil and JD(S) A H Vishwanath and Basavaraj Horatti have raised objection to the sale of land to JSW Steel.

"..Congress party MLA from the region Anand Singh hasalso raised his objection to the sale of land."

The assembly session should be called immediately, Ashoka asserted.

"We are ready to discuss the issue in detail. The CM has said he was ready to discuss with us the issue, instead let him call for assembly session, as not only BJP several leaders ofcoalition parties- Congress and JD(S)-- have also raised the issue," he said.

The BJP's Karnataka unit, which was on a round-the-clock sit-in since Friday protesting the sale of land to JSW Steel at Ballari and other issues, had even decided to "lay siege" to the chief minister's official residence Sunday, but they were stopped on the way and detained.

The Karnataka cabinet had recently decided to convert the lease of 3,667 acres to JSW Steel into sale, in accordancewith the initial agreement.

Caught in a row, the state cabinet Friday decided to refer its decision to a cabinet sub-committee for reconsideration.

Stating that there was no need for a cabinet sub-committee, Ashoka said the BJP will not accept its report.

"Decision of leaders of all the parties is that the land should not be given.

Other than Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, K J George (industries Minister) and D K Shivakumar (Water Resources Minister), every one is against the sale and have made open statements, also have written letters," he claimed.

There should be discussion on the land given to the firm and the purpose for which the company was usingit and how many jobs have been generated and number ofKannadigas given jobs, he said.

The Public Accounts Committee headed byAshoka which met on Tuesday is likely to take up the land sale issue during its next sitting in about 15 days, according to official sources.

Bengaluru, June 15 : The Karnataka BJP Saturday RPT Saturday demanded a CBI probe into the alleged financial fraud perpetrated by an investment firm here, leaving thousands of investors in the lurch.

The owner of city-based IMA Jewels, Mohammed Mansoor Khan, had disappeared few days ago after allegedly threatening to commit suicide while police have formed teams to trace him.

State BJP chief B S Yedyurappa put forth the demand for a probe by the central agency after a group of people belonging to the minority community, most of them investors in IMA Jewels, met him and submitted a petition.

Yeddyurappa assured them that BJP MPs from Karnataka would ensure the central governments intervention and steps to ensure the Enforcement Directorate probe into the case.

"We (BJP) feel that it is our responsibility to ensure that innocents who have lost their money get it back," Yeddyurappa was quoted as saying by BJP in a release.

Only a CBI inquiry can ensure justice to the affected investors, he said, as he held the state government responsible for the "injustice" to the IMA investors.

The BJP leader also promised those who met him that the centre would take all steps to find out the wherebaouts of IMA jewels owner Mohammed Mansoor Khan.

Earlier, speaking to reporters, Yeddyurappa raised questions about Minority welfare minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan's alleged links with Mohammed Mansoor Khan.

"While asking him (Mansoor) to come back, Zameer, who is a Minister, has said that government is with you (Mansoor), dont fear- what does this mean? Chief Minister has to answer this," he said.

Hitting back at Yeddyurappa, Zameer Ahmed Khan pointed out that it was he who took initiative after the incident came to light and sought a SIT probe.

"It was not Yeddyurappa. Making speeches sitting somewhere is not enough. We are doing whatever we can.

SIT is probing...," he said.

Nearly 30,000 complaints have so far been received by police in connection with the case, relating to which seven directors of the firm were apprehended on June 12 .

Mohammed Mansoor Khan went absconding after allegedly threatening to commit suicide in an audio clip.

As the audio went viral, panicked investors, most of them Muslims, had swarmed the firm's office at Shivajinagar in thousands, demanding action against the owner and directors.

Khan in an audio clip had purportedly said he was committing suicide as he was fed up with corruption.

He had also alleged the Shivajinagar Congress MLA Roshan Baig took Rs 400 crore from him and was not returning it.

Baig had rubbished the charge, alleging that his political adversaries had orchestrated the "series of events" to tarnish his character.

On June 12, The Karnataka government had formed a 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.

As reports emerged that Khan had fled to Dubai, the SIT had said they were investigating his whereabouts.

The Enforcement Directorate also filed a case of money laundering in the alleged ponzi scheme.

The agency's zonal office here filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), equivalent to an FIR, and has pressed criminal charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), officials had said.                                        [Agencies]
