BUDGAM, NOVEMBER 11: A day-long
seminar on legal awareness was held here on Saturday.
The programme was a jointly organized by National
Commission for Women and J&K’s State Commission for Women. Around 200 women including
college going students, Asha workers, Self Help groups and representatives from
NGOs and other fields participated.
Resource persons Dr Shazia, Assistant Professor Women’s Studies
Centre, Kashmir University, Muslim Jan from MERC department Kashmir University,
Subaya Yasmeen, Reader in JK High Court and Advocate Mohammad Altaf Khan spoke
on different state and central laws including, Domestic Violence Act and Muslim
Law to create awareness about the women legal rights .
Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Mohammad Haroon Malik said that every citizen of the society has duty to contribute in curbing
the domestic violence in the society.
Chairperson, J&K State Commission for Women, Nayeema Ahmad Mahjoor said
that such events are aimed at creating mass awareness among the womenfolk about
their rights in the society.
Nayeema said that similar programmes would be conducted in all the 22
districts of the State to ensure the rights of the women are safeguarded.
“The
Commission plans to organize such progammes in every nook and corner of the State
for mass awareness among women about their rights and the laws protecting them
against domestic violence or any other crime,” she said.
She urged participants to work for the betterment of womenfolk.
She also
informed that Women Commission would conduct police sanitization programs in
the state to ensure every woman feels free to register her complaint with the
police about domestic violence.
