Delhi, Nov 2: People of Tripura have faced discrimination and
"criminal neglect" from the central government, the CPI-M party has
said and even maintained that the high-handedness happened under the erstwhile
UPA governments and continues also under Modi government.
"Numerous and sustained agitations in the state and also in the nation's capital backed by the voice of the CPI(M) members in Parliament, ultimately forced the central government to act," said a booklet titled, 'Tripura - A People's First Model'.
In this context, the booklet talks about railway projects in the northeastern state and said, "Over 40 years after Dharmanagar in northern Tripura was connected to Indian Railway network, Tripura's state capital Agartala got the rail connection in 2008".
The booklet also said that: "This discrimination and high-handedness happened under the erstwhile UPA governments and continues with more vigor under the present Modi government".
However, it said, "Tripura has put in place an alternative path or model of governance in a state, even when it is constrained by the unfair centralisation of financial and political power exercised by the central government".
In her introduction to the booklet, CPI-M polit bureau member Brinda Karat wrote, "The alternative path is imbued with a people oriented outlook that carefully and meticulously conceptualises and implements policies that reach the poorest and most isolated communities and empowers them both economically and socially".
"Most of the time, the Tripura government has had to struggle against central government for getting the rightful share and resources or against unilateral measures that damage the state's work," Ms Karat said. UNI
