Hanoi,
Nov 11: In a joint statement on Syria in Da Nang in Vietnam, US President
Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday agreed to
continue their joint efforts in fighting Islamic State in Syria until it was
defeated.
The Kremlin confirmed the report about the statement on Syria that took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Da Nang and said it was coordinated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Da Nang. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the Kremlin announcement or the conversation. The White House press secretary Sarah Sanders had earlier told the reporters that Mr Trump would not hold a formal meeting with Mr Putin at the APEC Summit. According to the statement on Syria, Trump and Putin confirmed their commitment to Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and called on all parties to the Syrian conflict to take an active part in the Geneva political process. Both the leaders also agreed that there was no military solution to the Syrian conflict, according to the text of the joint statement published on the Kremlin's website. Television pictures from Danang showed Putin and Trump chatting -- apparently amicably -- as they walked to the position where the traditional APEC summit photo was being taken at a viewpoint looking over the South China Sea.
