Da Nang, Nov 10: US interest in the Asia-Pacific will continue, President Donald Trump stressed on Friday, but called for 'better' trade deals.
"I am here to offer renewed friendship with America," Trump told the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO summit in this port city of Vietnam. "We will be friends, partners and allies for a long time to come," Trump told representatives of Asia-Pacific countries that have been anxious about what the US policy would be under his administration. One of his first acts as president was to pull the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, turning his back on the "rebalance" to Asia strategy pivoted by his predecessor Barack Obama. Trump praised the economic progress in the "Indo-Pacific" region as "nothing short of miraculous."
He praised the transformation of many Asian nations, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, saying Washington has been an active partner in Asia-Pacific since the US first won independence. But he added that the US would insist on "robust" trade deals based on "fairness and reciprocity." He also voiced his preference for bilateral trade agreements and said the US would no longer enter into large-scale trade pacts that have disadvantaged his country.
"I am always going to put America first," Trump added. He accused some countries in the region of "product dumping, subsidized goods, currency manipulation and predatory industrial policies." "We can no longer tolerate these chronic trade abuses and we will not tolerate them."
Trump came to power last November on the back of a campaign that espoused protectionism and "America First" policies. APEC brings together heads of governments from across the Pacific Rim to discuss economic issues. In recent years, security has also been on the agenda in view of the current rise in international terrorism. The 21 members of APEC are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the US and Vietnam. They constitute about 60% of the world's gross domestic product. UNI
