Srinagar, Nov 8: With no breakthrough in holding talks with separatists so far, Centre-appointed interlocutor Dineshawar Sharma on Wednesday said that he will try his best to meeting Hurriyat Conference leaders.
“I met many people during the last two days. I wish that peace returns to Kashmir valley,” Mr Sharma told reporters after meeting lone CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami at his Gupkar residence. When asked if he would go that extra mile to contact separatist leaders, he said, “I will try my best to meet Hurriyat leaders.” Mr Sharma, a former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief, arrived here on a five-day visit to the state on Monday. This is his maiden visit to the valley after being appointed as an interlocutor by the Centre to initiate dialogue process with all stakeholders to resolve the Kashmir issue. However, separatists, besides traders and some other unions have boycotted the meeting with the interlocutor, alleging it is a futile exercise. The main opposition in the state National Conference (NC) has also said that they expect very little from the process initiated by the interlocutor.Terming the appointment of the interlocutor by the Centre ‘nothing new’, NC president Farooq Abdullah has said that restoration of Autonomy is the only way forward to resolve the Kashmir issue. “Government of India (GoI) should devise a sound Kashmir policy. I have very little expectations from this new interlocutor to J&K,” he said.
He said the reports given by previous interlocutors were gathering dust somewhere in the North Block.Backing Dr Abdullah’s comment, NC working president Omar Abdullah after meeting the interlocutor here on Wednesday, said, “We don’t expect much from the dialogue process initiated by the interlocutor because the Centre has itself watered down our hopes when Prime Minister said talking of autonomy for the state amounted to demanding 'Azadi'.”Mr Omar Abdullah said that staying in a guesthouse and waiting for people to come to meet him will not work and hoped that the interlocutor would broaden his ambit to hold talks to resolve Kashmir issue. The Congress has asked the Centre to come clean about the mandate given to the interlocutor and identify the stakeholders with whom the dialogue will be held.“Union government should come clean about whether Mr Sharma was being sent to restore peace in the Valley or has he the mandate to find out the resolution of Kashmir issue,” senior Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra said.About 40 delegations of little known local organisations, including students, BJP and PDP youth leaders have met Mr Sharma who will now be visiting winter capital, Jammu for two days.He is scheduled to meet Governor N N Vohra, Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and others in Jammu. UNI
