Mirik, Dec 12: GJM
supremo Bimal Gurung's three close associates, including Ramesh Shresta, have been arrested for alleged
arson and attack on West Bengal tourism minister Gautam Deb during
violent Gorkhaland movement in June-July, according to additional superintendent
of police (Kurseong) Dhruba Das.
Mirik police station chief Sujit Lama laid a trap following
an input that Ramesh Sheresta, who led an attack on the convoy of Gautam
Deb at Panighata on July 13, was returning to India from Nepal
through porous border following a hilly trail of Nirpani on Monday night.
Ramesh, leader of Terai region of GJM, also led many attacks on the government forces, a resident of Jabra in Mirik, was today taken to a court of law for further police remand. Ramesh Shresta fled to Nepal when police began crackdown on the GJM activists.
Police also arrested Bimal Gurung's two other confidante -Palden Tamang (32) and Bikash Sarki (32) from two different Kalimpong on Monday for their alleged involvement in arson and attacking on the government forces.
However, GJM president Bimal Gurung, who has been slapped under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, was still absconding.
Meanwhile, chairman of the Kalimpong municipality Suva Pradhan has summoned a special meeting of the civic board on Thursday to test strength.
Mr Pradhan on Monday said he called the special meeting following a written request by 14 councillors of the 23-member board seeking a vote of no-confidence against him. Fourteen councillors now backing Binay Tamang faction of GJM on December 4 wrote to the chairman to seek trust vote in the municipality.
