Ahmedabad, Dec 12: The Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said as the new party
chief his priority would be to strengthen the organisation and also change the
language of political discourse in the country.
"As party chief I want to strengthen the organisation
and some of that you will see in Gujarat elections," Mr Gandhi told his
maiden news conference after announcement of his election as new Congress
president succeeding his mother Sonia Gandhi.
"I want to change the course of political discourse......it has become so ugly," he said. Mr Gandhi maintained notwithstanding whatever Prime Minister Modi has to say about him, "mere muh se unke baare mein galat language nahi niklega (I will not utter a single wrong word about him)".
"It may be Mr Modi....but he is Prime Minister of India," the new Congress chief said.
Referring to suspension of Mani Shankar Aiyar, he said what the party leader spoke about Prime Minister was wrong.
"I have made it clear I will not tolerate such things, Modi ji is after all the Prime Minister of India, though what all Modi ji said about Dr Manmohan Singh is also not acceptable," said Mr Gandhi on Prime Minister's attack on Dr Singh for alleged conspiracy with Pakistan to influence Gujarat polls.
On Prime Minister Modi's 'seaplane' travel from Sabarmati Riverfront to Dharoi Dam, the Congress leader said, "Modi ji agar seaplane mein udna chahte hain toh kuch ghalat nahi, acchi baat hai lekin ye ek distraction hai, asli sawaal hai 22 years mein janta ke liya kya kiya? (If Modiji was keen for a flight in a seaplane, there is nothing wrong in it....the real issue what has BJP done in 22 years)".
Mr Gandhi said people of Gujarat have shown "immense love and support" during last few months.
"I am not going to forget this lifelong.....Everywhere I went people showed love and offered me khakras and other snacks," he said.
Mr Gandhi further said, "People of Gujarat are very intelligent, they can see that PM Modi is not talking about corruption or farmers in his rallies. There is a massive undercurrent, I am actually little surprised, I had expected BJP to fight with more strength".
To a question on his temple visit, Mr Gandhi said, "Jahan mauka milta hai vahan mandir jaata hoon (Wherever I get opportunity
I go to the temple)".
"I have visited temples in Uttarakhand ...... visited Kedarnath temple also....is it in Gujarat?," he said. UNI
