Ahmedabad, Dec 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday staged a protest in front of the Congress office in the city and demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi after Other Backward Class leader and Congress candidate Alpesh Thakor said Prime Minister Narendra Modi became fair after eating mushroom imported from Taiwan.
Delhi BJP Spokesperson Tajinder Bagga, who was leading the protest, told UNI, “Day after day, Congress leaders are insulting the prime minister, which is not a good signal for a healthy democracy. We have come here to give roses to the Congress leaders and say ‘Get Well Soon’.”
The protestors were holding red roses and placards written “Get well soon” and raised slogans like 'don’t use mean words' as Gujarat is the land of Gandhiji.
Reacting to the protest, Congress’ Youth wing Spokesperson Amrish Ranjan Pandey said, “The BJP knows that the Congress is getting huge mandate in this election. So they have come in desperation and protesting in front of our office just for their survival. The people of Gujarat have made up their mind for the Congress.”
On Tuesday, Thakor, who joined the Congress party just ahead of announcement of elections in the state, stoked a controversy, saying “Modiji eats mushrooms from Taiwan. One mushroom costs Rs.80,000 and he eats five mushrooms a day. He was dark like me but he became fair because of imported mushrooms.”
He also said that Mr Modi is eating these mushrooms since the days he was Gujarat chief minister.
The election campaign for the second phase of the assembly elections saw both the BJP and Congress hurling allegations against each other.
Polling would be held in 93 constituencies in central and north Gujarat on Thursday.
On December 9, polling was held in 89 seats in South Gujarat and Saurashtra areas.
The counting of votes result will be held on December 18. UNI
